Mumbai, March 15 The Goregaon police recently busted a gang of thieves who would target shops and offices across the city and decamp with computers posing as computer maintenance professionals. According to the police, the gang has committed close to 20 house break-in and theft cases across the city.

The arrested accused have been identified as Mohammed Mohsin Shaikh (22), Zaheer alias Rahil Shaikh (22), Bhaskar Narayan Nair (32), Shabbo Asgar Shaikh (32) and Santosh Gurcharan Yadav (23). They were arrested by the police on March 11.

According to the Goregaon police, after receiving a specific tip-off that a gang of house breakers would arrive at MTNL Junction on SV Road, Goregaon (West) in a taxi with the intention of committing a theft, a trap was laid accordingly and the accused were arrested.

The police recovered iron grill cutters, screw drivers and hammers from the gang.

“This gang would break into shops and steal computers from them. They would also target offices in the city between 6:00 am and 8:00 am, where they would show up well dressed and pose as computer engineers who had been sent to the office to collect the computers for maintenance. They would then stroll out of the office with laptops and personal computers, without anyone suspecting anything untoward. They would always arrive in a taxi in which they would load the computers and make a getaway,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 11, Makrand Ranade.

According to the police, the leader of the gang, Mohammed Shaik is a BSc graduate and holds a diploma in computer applications. Zaheer and Shabbo hail from Haryana.

Santosh Yadav is the driver of the taxi used by the gang.

“The gang is involved in 15 to 20 house break-in and theft cases registered in Oshiwara, D N Nagar, Malad, Goregaon (East), Mulund and Turbhe police stations, as well as in Navi Mumbai and Thane,” said Ranade.
