Kolkata, June 11 In a daring daylight heist, armed robbers — probably from Jharkhand — looted Rs 84 lakh from the Purulia branch of the Punjab National Bank on Wednesday morning.

The bank, located barely 100 metres from the office of Purulia’s Superintendent of Police Ashok Prasad, had just opened for business, when eight armed men burst into the premises, held all at gunpoint and made away with Rs 84,13,815 in cash. They had come in motorcycles with no number plates, and had waylaid the lone security guard before he could even reach for his weapon.

Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia has ruled out the hand of Maoists in this loot.
