Kolkata, April 4 Police have failed to make any breakthrough in the robbery and gangrape case that took place on the Mahananda Link Express near New Mal station in Jalpaiguri district late on Thursday night.

A group of robbers allegedly attacked a reserved compartment and robbed the passengers. Before getting down, they allegedly dragged a 24-year-old woman into a toilet and took turns to rape her, the police said.

It was meant to be a “punishment” for the woman who had tried to resist the robbers, passengers told the police.

She was going to Binnaguri on vacation from Delhi where she worked.

A senior officer said no arrest could be made till now. A medical test of the rape victim has been done. The report is awaited.

The police said a group from Bagrakot area of Dooars was suspected to be behind the crime.

The incident sent shockwaves in the region even as passengers of the Mahananda Link Express demonstrated at the New Mal station on Thursday night, complaining against the lack of security.

No RPF personnel could be found when the gang raided the compartment and went on a rampage, they said.
