Bangalore, October 7: Sourav Ganguly made a surprise announcement of his retirement from Test cricket after the end of four-match series against Australia beginning Thursday, bringing to an end a 16-year career that had of late shown a slump.

"Before I leave, I have to make an announcement. This is going to be my last series. I have decided to quit. These four Tests are going to be my last," said Ganguly, winding up a routine press conference on Tuesday.

The announcement by the most successful cricket captain India ever had only served to confirm speculation that surrounded his selection into the Test team for the first two matches last week on the understanding that he would quit after the series.

"I have spoken to my teammates that these four Tests would be my last matches. Thanks for all the support, hopefully I will go out on a winning note," said the stylish 36-year-old left-hander from Kolkata.

Ganguly, a veteran of 109 Tests, has been in and out of the team after he lost captaincy in 2005 following a spat with the then coach Greg Chappell during tour of Zimbabwe. He had assumed the captaincy in the most difficult time for cricket when Mohammad Azharuddin had to step down on match-fixing charges.

In 2007, he was dropped from the one-day team during the England tour and ever since had failed to make a serious comeback.

Sourav Ganguly has played in 109 Test matches, scoring 6,888 runs at an average of 41.74 runs per innings. But it was the shorter format of the game where Ganguly excelled and his records prove it. In 311 ODIs Sourav scored a phenomenal 11, 363 runs with 22 tons and 72 half centuries. Irrespective of whatever his detractors might say his adieu will leave a gaping hole in India’s batting line up.

The new Chief Selector K Srikkanth said Ganguly had a chat with him before making the announcement.

"He had a chat with me and a co-selector. He probably feels it's time for him. Every now and then the axe was on him and he said 'Chika' let me play without any pressure on me," Srikkanth said.

"I pray he scores a lot of runs in the series and India wins. A guy like Sourav Ganguly deserves it because he has done a lot for this country," he added.

Former captain Bishan Singh Bedi said it was not a time to feel sad but to celebrate because Ganguly deserves a grand farewell.

"His contribution has been enormous. A great Indian cricketer, a legend has hung up his boots. I hope he has done it on his own terms," Bedi said.

Another former skipper Kapil Dev welcomed Ganguly's decision but felt nobody should put pressure on senior players to quit.

"Nobody talks about retirement of the BCCI officials but they only put pressure on seniors, who are great players and should leave on their own. Nobody but the players themselves should decide when to go," he said.

Venkatapathy Raju, a former selector who had played with him, said he was not shocked by the decision and felt it was right.

Former chief selector Kiran More, who shared a stormy relationships with Ganguly, said it was a big decision by the left-hander.

"He has done a fantastic job for the country. He probably wanted to go on a high and it was a good opportunity against Australia," More said.

Ganguly, the overall fifth-highest run-getter for India, is only the seven batsmen in the world to cross the 10,000-run mark in ODIs.

He led India to 21 wins in 49 matches before he was sacked in 2005.

He, however, was a surprise inclusion for the first two Tests against Australia being ignored for the five-day domestic Irani Cup tie last month, a selection trial for the series.

Come back as a commentator by Muskan singh on 07 Oct 2008

Sourav come back as a commentator and replace all the jokers like Harsha Bogle and Charu Sharma who have never played cricket but give 'expert' comments on the TV.

Saurav Ganguly's retirement by Pratap Nair on 07 Oct 2008

There is no doubt that Saurav has had a brilliant career and he will rank among the best that India has produced. The Seniors who are not in form have to make way for the juniors and that cannot happen in one stroke. You will probably see Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble call it quits after a few more tests and eventually it will be VVS laxman and the great Sachin Tendulkar. Among the Seniors, Saurav had a lean trot in Sri lanka and has had a bad match against New Zealand A. Obviously he had to be the first to go. However I think he is going in glory and there is nothing to complain or be sad about. I do hope that he will end these last four matches with fifties and hundreds aplenty to make his exit a memorable one. Saurav all of us in India (not Bengal only) love you for the brilliant performances of the past and will never forget the pleasure you have given us for so many years. We do not like to see you go, but it is in the best interests of the game in India. Thank you Saurav.

The prince of calcutta will retire as the king of india. His 'never give up' attitude will forever inspire me in my life. And whenever I triumph, which I definitely will, I too will wave my shirt.

Bid Adieu by varun on 07 Oct 2008

Bye Bye DADA....................The Finest off side player i had ever seen........

God Bless!! by Husaini Surti on 07 Oct 2008

Ganguly gifted "Agression and Courage" to Indian Cricket that it badly needed. He shall be remembered as one of the finest captains who imparted Indian Cricket "Go for the Kill Attitude". Though he suffered from really bad politics, he has chosen the right time to bid Adieu to Cricket. Hope, we see him contribute in different form; be it as a Indian Cricket Coach / Selector / Comentator after retirement.

It is time the other greats Rahul, Sachin and Anil also follow the footsteps of Sourav.

Sourav-a fighter by Sudhir Bisht on 07 Oct 2008

Hi Sourav,This is one of your most vocal critics, Sudhir Bisht. I have been on print media several time, chiding you, admonishing you and ranting at you but I feel more than a tinge of sadness to hear about your retirement. You have been a fighter, a skilled one at that and I wish that you join the public life. We need combative, plain-speaking and spirited fighters like you in public life.

its not fair by rajeev verma on 07 Oct 2008

its indeed a great loss to india. If we see last few years, Ganguly has been forced out of the team due to politics. One of the finest one day opening batsman and indias most successful captain was treated badly. Its good retiring than to face humiliation.

Salute by Amit Gupta on 07 Oct 2008

Great era of cricket will set with Dada...salute to him....May he is ends up in style...

Why Ganguly ? by Debasis on 07 Oct 2008

Why Ganguly again..? this is a conspiracy against one of the indias finest batsmans ever lived. I don't understand what game selectors are playing with his career. Dravid should be the one to be sacked.
