“Sourav is a cricketer with a very strong character and this void can’t be fulfilled overnight. Everybody will surely miss him,” Kapil, who has 434 Test wicket from 131 Tests, said.

Ganguly on Tuesday made a surprise announcement of his retirement after the end of home series against Australia beginning on Thursday, bringing an end a 16-year-long international career that had of late shown a slump.

“I think, Sourav’s decision will not put any extra pressure on the team as there are a number of experienced players, who know how to tackle the situation.

“I am sure, there is no tension among the cricketers before the important series and as far as Sourav is concerned, he also must be relaxed and happy after the announcement,” Kapil said.

Kapil, who is also the Chairman of Indian Cricket League, hailed the meeting between ICC President David Morgan and ICL owner Subhash Chandra in London on Tuesday to discuss the ‘rebel’ Twenty20 venture’s demand for recognition.

“This is a very positive move by the ICC. We hope the ICC, for the sake of young cricketers, will look into the matter.
