New Delhi, March 7 The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is trying to streamline its garbage collection, transfer and disposal mechanism through attempts to rein in private companies having the contract for collecting garbage and taking it to landfills and through the setting up of new facilities.

Delhi Mayor Arti Mehra on Friday said that after the BJP coming to power in the MCD, the three private companies in charge of garbage collection from City Zone, Sadar Paharganj Zone, Karol Bagh Zone, South Zone, West Zone and Central Zone have been collectively fined Rs 63 lakh. “We often found that these companies were doing their work with laxity. So we fined them in lakhs. We deduct the fine from the payment being made to them,” she said.

Mehra said that the newly developed Efficiency Improvement Centre for Sanitation near Vijay Ghat has started functioning. Garbage collected is brought here first, where it is compressed.
