Gavaskar was no angel in his playing days: Ponting

Melbourne, November 19: Ricky Ponting has lashed out at legendary Indian Sunil Gavaskar and other former players for often blaming the Australian team for on-field confrontations, saying the Indian opener was not an angel during his playing days.

"I know that over the past 10 years, probably longer, a notion has developed that the Australian team walks out onto the field intent on getting in faces and having a few words. Unfortunately, as soon as a spectator or a commentator spots one of my team chipping on opponent, they assume it is a pre-meditated attack," Ponting said.

"The most laughable aspect is when I hear former players complaining, as though they never put a toe out of line in their day.

"I still have a vivid image of Sunil Gavaskar angrily trying to take his opening partner off the MCG with him in 1981 when he was given out lbw in a Test match, but to hear him today you'd think he was positively angelic when he was the best opening batsman in the world," he wrote in his 'Captain's Diary 2008'.

Ponting said he was disappointed by the hypocrisy of former cricketers who never kept the standards in their hey-days but were demanding the same from his team.

Pointing points by thevampire on 20 Nov 2008

Pointing is just veneting out his frustration. Looks like to me the whole team is mentally unstable after their defeat at the hands of so called third world.

Gavaskar was no angel in his playing days: Ponting by Gautam Gulati on 20 Nov 2008

Sunil Gavaskar has said many times that his biggest mistake and only regret of his cricket life was to take off the team from the cricket ground. He had realized his mistake and appologized for it. That subject should be closed. Similarly if Ponting also realizes his mistake and agrees that the Sydney test was won by them by cheating and appologize for that people might forgive him

Grapes are sour ponting by Harry deol on 20 Nov 2008

When the going gets tough the tough keeps going.Mr ponting please dont get your frustrations on the people who have proved them themselves in the past like the lagentary Sunil Gavaskar.WELL if you guys can boo for mr don bradman, you can boo at any body but please excuse our former cricketing greats .THANKS.

Conduct Certificate from Ponting by Cheenu on 20 Nov 2008

The last thing Gavaskar needs is a conduct certificate from Mr. Picky Ronting :-)

Ponting the preacher by Joe Thomas on 20 Nov 2008

Mr. Ponting; you have a memeory of 1981 and not of 2007 Sydney test. Your vice caption Clark claimed the catch of the the best India batsman Sourav Ganguly in the second innnings. The ball bounced twice before Clark caught it and you supported the catch which led to Australia winning the test and the series. I was in the stadium and saw the the twice bounce through my binaculars. The match was covered by two seperate live channels and the tv footage will confirm my observation. So why the hell you are claiming to be a better angel (or devil) than legendary Gavaskar. Your standard in BHAJJI who not only got you out whenever he wanted and scored more runs than you in cruicial times that led to you loosing the series. The Australian cricket caption is the second most important position in Australia and you team conduct has the dubious distinction of being commented by the PM and Goveror General. I fully agree with Peter Reabouk of Sydney Morning Herald that "YOU SHOULD BE SACKED

Reply to pawar by Leena on 20 Nov 2008

Mr Pawar, listen to the commentary by the aussie media and you will change your mind. They are out there constantly criticising the Indian players and praising their own to the skies. Indians, respect your own people and your nation. Stop glorifying and imitating the west.

Part of Ponting frustation by kumar on 19 Nov 2008

With the retirement of Mc Grath and Gilchrist both the bowling and batting departments of Australia became weak, this losing streak will continue until find some good people in their team. Now he is in frustation of winning captain to losing captain...

ponting v/s gavasker by mahesh on 19 Nov 2008

ponting is right when he says that former cricketers are not angels this includes our mr gavasker who todays preaches from high pedestal.. talking abt the incident even i remember how he made a fool of himself.. frankly he has always played for himself and for the team..

Ponting! by Sri America on 19 Nov 2008

I pity this crazy man called Ponting. He is a big loser and not getting anything right these days. He has no batting "skill" left and surely "lucky" enough to stay on Aussie cricket team. Now he is using his foul mouth to utter nonsense. Please ignore him!!

Spirit of the Game by Daniel Sweeetlin on 19 Nov 2008

Behaviour in a play ground will definitly be different from the one in a cozy room. No doubt about it. Gavaskar also was a player! But the queston is 'did he use his words or gestures to irritate the oponents? Was his behaviour against the spirit of the game?'

Ponting by Subhas Pawar on 19 Nov 2008

Gavaskar was a great batsman but his cricket commentary is too partisan. Frankly I put the sound off when he starts to talk.

reply by nita on 20 Nov 2008

Rubbish u are another like the aussies .Ask them if they will support when needed. .

Ponting by Shrinath Iyengar on 19 Nov 2008

I think best way to handle Ponting and his likes is to ignore him totally, not publish any of his blaberings and treat him like an ordinary person when he is here in India again.

Ponting must be insance by Prathap Chithapuram on 19 Nov 2008

I am not a big fan of Gavaskar but the incident that Ponting refers to, was not his fault. Ponting refers to Gavaskar's walking out with Chetan Chauhan but does not state anything about Lilee's possible racial abuse that hurled at him. Even if Gavaskar dragged Chetan along with him, it only qualifies as unsportsmanlike conduct and does not represent sledging or racial abuses that Australians having been doling out to all the Asian teams for years. Ponting must be insane and blind say things he has said.

Gavaskar was no angel in his playing days by Moahammed Haneef on 19 Nov 2008

Haan Pointing dont teach lessons to Gavaskar. When he was playing cricket you was bacha. Dont behave that you are smart. We know Australia team is number one but the days are near to see Indian Cricket team will be number one.

Gavaskar was no angel ..... by Subbiah Shanmugam on 19 Nov 2008

Ponting is really stupid. He's so lucky to be playing for Australia. Remember the last but one world cup where Indians allowed him, yes allowed him to score runs, but for that his playing days were numbered. He scored a match winning century plus and that's how he remained in the team. Let the game be played by all in the right spirit and defaulters penalised severely, so that he/she/they would think ten times b4 sledging r abusing. By the way, calling someone a monkey is not a racial slur in Indian terms and Oz have to understand that calling someone and someone's mother names is and abusing is much worse.

Ponting to shut his mouth by N.RAAJ KOUSHIK on 19 Nov 2008

I will sad about Ponting. This guy really requires a psychiatric treatment. The way in which he has written in his book, as per the reports made in the media, he might not have spared anybody. I may not be surprised if he has written about himself, including his nasty behaviour in India after winning the Champion's trophy for the first time. People have not forgotten the way in which he along with his team mates behaved to pose for the photograph, by pushing our Hon'ble Minister and BCCI Chairman Mr Sharad Pawar. Mr Pawar has not made an issue out of it, which shows his generosity. As Indians our blood were boiling when we had witnessed such a thing and in all fairness Cricket Australia should have taken necessary disciplinary action against Ponting, Damien Martyn and other players who were involved in the incident, by seeing the TV footage, even if such an action was not demanded by India. Let this Ponting shut his mouth and desist from talking about others.

hypocracy by phiroz on 19 Nov 2008

Most gracious cricketeer in the history of cricket is Kapil Dev. Even when he was thrown out before going to break Gavaskar's record by Gavaskar on some flimsy grounds, never once did he speak out against this monsterity, instead while Gavaskar was being meligned I don't remember what for, Kapil Dev stood up for him.Sorry folks everyone knows he is no Angle.

Shame for fame by Stephen Williams on 19 Nov 2008

Pointing doest know how to handle his defeat, to divert his nation he loses all his sportsmanship and doing politics by words, which reduces world cup champions fame. His words about Dhoni and Yuvaraj comes out of shame

confused ponting by meghaa on 19 Nov 2008

its better that ponting concentrates on his cricket. everyone is much aware of how the australian team behaves on and the off field when they lose or win a game.

This is hilarious by vrisika on 19 Nov 2008

So now it is Gavaskar's turn to be picked upon by Pointing- height of frustration. Has he gone insane.

Ponting: A stupid, arrogant fool!! by Kaushik on 19 Nov 2008

I have four things to say here:1) Sunny did not do that because he was given out. It was a combination of an incorrect umpiring decision and Dennis Lillee's behaviour that caused it.2) What Gavaskar did was a mistake. He learnt from it. Ponting now says that he has vivid memories of that day. What has he learnt from that? 3) Going by the logic Ricky Ponting says, other than God, no one can criticise him, given that no one is perfect. He obviously does not believe in the fact that a human being can learn from his mistakes. For e.g. a drug addict who has been put through rehab and has recovered should not tell someone else not to use drugs!!!4) This is getting way too boring and tiring. Ponting should just shut his trap and play cricket!!

by that definition the entire aussie team need not speak or talk about morality by ashok pai on 19 Nov 2008

australian cricket invented a whole new scheme of things by inventing "sledging" "extreme verbal sports" "mental disintegration" etc. they want to define how much is bad and how much is good. cricket is theirs to keep is their feeling. this kind of rabble rousing is sheer nonsense. we know how good they are at true sportsmanship - when they bowled an underarm delivery. we know how good they are when they abuse every single opponent and remind them of their disputed parentage and the kind.

Ponting's ting ting by Ananth Seth on 19 Nov 2008

Ponting, we never expected that one series defeat will cause you so much of mental imbalance. We still blv u have some time left for cricket. But that is physically though. Mentally, u seem to be beyond the expiry date.

Ponting is Covering his Failure! by mohan on 19 Nov 2008

I think Aussies have a funny habit of Blamming others, pitch, even Bats
