Veerappa Moily

New Delhi Home Minister P Chidambaram along with his cabinet colleagues Law Minister Veerappa Moily and Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad held meeting to analyse Delhi High Court's judgement decriminalising same gender sex.

Emerging out of the half-an-hour long meeting held at North Block, Moily said the trio will submit their report to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

"We met today and analysed the judgement and will submit our report to the Prime Minister," he said.

In what is considered as a victory for gay rights activists, the Delhi High Court had on Thursday legalised homosexual acts among consenting adults holding that the 149-year-old law making it a criminal offence is violative of fundamental rights and not punishable.

The government had yesterday adopted a cautious approach and avoided any direct reply on what its next move will be following the judgement.

"We need to examine the details of the judgement. Let me examine it," Moily had said when asked about the government's move following the judgement.

OUT OF THE THREE MINISTERS by Ramesh on 06 Jul 2009

This shows, what Job our Miniters are having? India has got plenty of other major issues which should be addressed. Leaving all these, our so called MPs are discussing un-wanted matters. Are they have common sense? Chidambaram and Moily fit for nothing. Let us advise them to do some developmental work instead of sitting and wasting time.

What's wrong by RB on 06 Jul 2009

What's the problem.....Why can we not follow the way of life-live and let live.....The judgement clearly says that it is not a criminal offense if it is practised between consenting adults......Allowing someone the freedom to choose his or her sexual nature, without harming anyone else, should be their right.....

Freedom of choice by gopal on 04 Jul 2009

I am a hertosexual...no ones business...Similarly if some one is bisexual or gay or lesbian...its none of my business. Why religious leaders and politicians are making it a big deal is not understandable. Our society has had gays and lesbians for long but their sexual preferances were not considered "lawful". After this judgement what ever their sexual preferences are...they are "lawful" Nothing has changed apart from that. Why Mulla and Moily crying???????

Gay life sttyle by sudhansu gantayet on 04 Jul 2009

This judge ment is one of the many steps the indiian cultures has adopted in the last three decedes. What ever tall came we have made to keep the indian culture rolling high, but the truth is that we are margilised and adopted the europe and american culture in the life style. The best part is the there is no reaction from any political parties ,religious institution and also from elders of the society. The situation what could be visualised that more or less majority of the indians has the judgement without protesting it.It is very clear it will destroy the balance in the society.Still we feel the citizens of the country to debete more on this issue before allowing this unusal practice to be allowed in our country .

amitabh by amitabh mukerji on 04 Jul 2009

A gay lifestyle is not mainstream nor universally acceptable even in the West, but harassing gays is not acceptable anymore. As for "western filth" described by one correspondent, perhaps he should shun flush toilets (if he uses one) and return to using fields or roadside as most people in India do. After all, indoor plumbing and flush toilets are examples of "filthy western" civilization.

Approach the bench, Counselor! Clarify your last sentence by Hary Nambiar on 03 Jul 2009

I agree with the learned Supreme Court lawyer and the eminent scholar, Chanakya. There is nothing new in this judgment. It will have serious repercussions on the behavior of confused young people, who may think that this is another way to emulate western culture. I can not wait to watch those bolywood movies in which there will be mail looking and female looking heroes, heroines, villains, etc concealing their natural identity. There will be need for a series of amendments to existing laws. God will have to undergo a protracted process to get the approval of the Indian Bar Council to enter the Supreme Court, despite the fact that the learned Court might be anxious to hear HER!

lets give it a pass by radhika vyas on 03 Jul 2009

Say, if u decriminalize a certain profession, wouldn't mean that all people would take up that profession thereon. People do what they have to do and have been doing so far. Decriminalizing this particular thing is step towards EVOLUTION OF SOCIETY, it didn't sit well with me...but i know that its the right thing to happen.Pretty much like so many things you so wish don't happen, but its in the greater good...so u keep mum. We think its unnatural but may be its natural and only rare...after all nature's creating such people who feel a certain way. There can be 1000 ways of looking at one thing, all of them could be right...infinite dimensional world it is.

restrict this stupid publicity by tharakshi on 03 Jul 2009

this news on the gay's pride has made the culture of indian to its top to the bottom..I respect every creatures feelings but when certain things which is against the nature should not be implemented to socialise it. Till now the generations are not aware and is least concerned about such things, After getting it socialised just imagine,, we cannot just fit in the public places where this is publicised,,I am happy that the gay's right are been given to them,,, but OUR VERY GOOD FRIEND MEDIA...PLEASE DO NOT PUBLICISE AND VIRUS THE MIND OF THE YOUNG GENERATION.....So i hope the government will look into the future of the country and our countrymen welfare. Its bad for our society by Sukumar,Advocate,Supreme Court of India on 03 Jul 2009

I am still shocked and surprised to see the huge publicity given by the media about this HC judgement. As an advocate what i understood from this judgement that honourable court has said nothing new and only repeated and interpretated what sec 377 means. If some has no problem and wants to practice gay with his consenting partner provided it should not be at public place than police will not interfare in it.I think it was the same situation prior to this judgement as well. The things which are fundamentally wrong can not be made right even by the apex courts. The things which are unnatural will remain unnatural.regards(sukumar)9871090724

homosexuality by sanjoy kumar satpathy on 03 Jul 2009

There are so many important issues pending in the high court for years, how come our gay friendly judges pick this up as a fast track verdict?

Gays by Tara Chand on 03 Jul 2009

Gays must be loved and respected as they have a problem. Let us not allow Western filth to penetrate our media. The West is pushing their shallow civilization on us. Let us not be hard on the Gays but let us not accept this abnormal lifestyle by encouraging it. Indians are tolerant but not stupid.

377 is a blot by Amit on 03 Jul 2009

Section 377 must be repealed pronto. It is an embarrassment to the country and proves us to be primitive, unscientific, bigoted people.

What is on the mind ?? by chanakya on 03 Jul 2009

Delhi High Court for reasons known to it self, always wanted to be in lime light for various controversial cases. How they can ignore the huge pile up cases which are crying for justice since ages and how they have become so active to deliver this controversial judgement which benefits handful people.Right now, the government is more worried about the effect this judgemnt will have on their trusted vote bank. Govt is least bothered about the teen agers who innocently followed those groups after the judgement. Govt is least bothered how it is going to affect the schools and colleges here after. I am sure Govt will contest this judgement in supreme court ang get stayed for ever.

We must not bow down to religious fanatics by jay on 03 Jul 2009

Our politicians have unique capability to bring the country backward by bowing down to the pressure to religious fundamentalists. I hope this time they will rise above the narrow political interests. In reality appeasement of any section on basis of religion or caste hardly translate into political gain in the long run. Fate of caste based political parties, religion based propaganda in recently concluded election is an indication. Legalization of gay sex is a milestone for India and I hope it will be upheld and implemented all over the country.
