Kolkata, April 15 Students of film studies in Kolkata can now have something to cheer about, as prestigious German schools of art are keen to forge a tie-up with city’s film school.

A German delegation visiting the city announced this today.

“Hamburg Art Academy has a lot to learn from the art scene in Kolkata,” said Koettering, president of University of Fine Arts, Hamburg at a function here.

The function was also attended by Gunter Wehrmann, Consul General of Germany in Kolkata, Abhijit Sanyal, special secretary and ex-officio director of film, West Bengal government and Anup Mittal, joint Secretary and ex-officio director of culture in the state government.

The three-member delegation comprising Koettering, Andrea Klier of University of Fine Arts, Hamburg and Burckardl of Hamburg Radio, has been in the city for the past two days and have visited two film schools.

“We have visited Roopkala Kendra and Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) and we were very impressed by both. But we have to select one,” said Burckardl. The delegation is on its way to Mumbai where it will be visiting more such schools.

But Burckardl also made it clear that they were not looking for schools that were immensely influenced by Bollywood.

Swapan Mullick, Director of the SRFTI said that it was a welcome step and exchange of faculty and students will give them exposure and help them broaden their horizons.

“Recently, 21 students from Bremen University in Germany were here at our institute for still photography and nine of our students went to the Zelig Film School in Italy to co-produce a film with the students there. Such steps are always welcome,” Mullick said.
