They said they would observe a bandh tomorrow against the government’s decision to limit the corridor till Ludhiana. Claiming that the Mumbai lobby had prevented industrial benefits from reaching Amritsar, Sidhu assured the industrialists that he would raise the matter in Parliament, meet Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, Industry and Railways Ministers.
Jyoti Mittal, a woman entrepreneur running a logistics company, said extension of the corridor till Attari would halve the cost of exports, which would cost double from Ludhiana. Industrialist Narinder Jain also outlined the benefits of extension of freight corridor till Attari. Sharad Aggarwal, convener, Hand Tools’ Panel of Engineering Export Promotion Council, said the prices of all categories of steel have increased by 27 per cent and Indian steel has become most expensive in the world.
“The February price rise has further compounded the problem and will sharply impact the competitiveness of Indian engineering products in the world markets. The government needs to take immediate steps in this regard,” he said. Jyoti Parkash, another industrialist, said the future of the iron and steel industry has become uncertain and it has witnessed a slump.
