Celebrating the evergreen spirit of Dev Sahab, Millionaires Trust is organising the ‘Evergreen Dev Anand Film Festival’ on August 14. “We will be showcasing four super hit films of Dev Sahab - Guide, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Jewel Thief and Des Pardes,” informs trustee Naveen Sharma as he reels out factoids about Guide. “Guide won 7 Filmfare Awards in 1965! It’s a landmark film, one that had big names like SD Burman, Yash Johar, father of cinematography, Fali Mistry et al attached with it,” says Sharma.
FYI: The song Din Dhal Jaye was not in the film originally. In its place, there was another one written by Hafeez Jalandhari, with words, Hameen main thi koi baat jo yaad na tumko aa sake; Tumne hamein bhula diya, hum na tumhe bhula sake. This song was recorded in Rafi’s voice, but Dev Anand was not happy with it, and he called in Burman da and Shailendra to compose another song, and thus Din Dhal Jaye was born. So popular was the film that Tad Danielewski was brought in to direct and produce The Guide in English. It was worked on by Pearl S Buck, a Nobel laureate and the film was first Indo American joint venture shot straight in four weeks!
After recording the music for one song, SD Burman fell sick. Dev Sahab met SD Burman and told him that he would wait for him to get well and only he would compose the music for Guide. What if I die, asked Burman da. In that case, Guide would be released with only one song in the movie, came the reply! Eventually SD Burman recovered and composed music for all the songs and the rest is history. Watch it replay!
