Director: A R Murugadoss
How do you count eight packs? The question plagues you when you first come at Aamir Khan in his new movie. His rippling musculature has been all the focus, through the past month, in print, in TV, in hoardings. That, and the buzz cut, with deep scars running through, showing the scalp. This is an Aamir we haven't seen before—fronting a frame filling physique, flaunting matter over mind.
If you had 15 minutes of memory, what would you cram into that terrifyingly short span? The name of your loved one, your phone number, your home? If you were a regular joe, that's exactly what you'd do, but if you are Aamir Khan in ‘Ghajini', you would bulk up your body, tattoo the name of the man you need to kill, and smear your walls with violent graffiti.
Short term memory loss means you forget, everything, within a short span of time. And the moment you get back into the zone, re-building the pieces of your life, the clock starts ticking again, for the next meltdown. It's a fascinating premise for a movie, and a few years ago, ‘Memento', made by Christopher Nolan, gave us a unique hero who suffers from short haul amnesia, while he searches for his beloved's killer.
In 2005, the Tamil ‘Ghajini', inspired by ‘Memento', catapulted the till-then-on-the-fringes lead pair of Surya and Asin into the frontlines, and turned out to be a monster hit.
Aamir Khan's first film this year, is a faithful remake of the Tamil film (with a lot of the original crew , including the director) barring a couple of twists in the climax. It has Aamir doing an out-and-out actioner after a long time (‘Sarfarosh' in 1999 was the last time he went around brandishing guns and decimating baddies). It also has him bare-chested for a lot of the running time, because he needs to display his impressively muscled frame. So is it all good?
Not really, no. The thing with doing a film like this is that you have to completely get with the flow of the film, and here Aamir is split down the middle. When he's Sanjay Singhania, the billionaire boy friend of wannabe celeb Kalpana (Asin), pretending to be a broke model himself, to insinuate himself into her good books, he's just fine.
The sequence in which he first sees her help a bunch of disabled kids and loses his iron-clad heart to her, is a winner. So are a few others: how many impossibly wealthy men carry ‘chutta' to give the ‘pani puri wala'? He flips him his platinum card, and we crack a smile, as we are meant to.
And then the transformation from smooth urbane tycoon, to the damaged violent guy happens, and the film starts to stutter. Not because Aamir doesn't try hard. He goes at this one with just as much effort as he does in his others, but he doesn't fill out this part with as much conviction. It's all his fault--- he shouldn't have done films like ‘Rang De Basanti' and ‘Taare Zameen Par', in which he coasted on his cerebral appeal. He just doesn't look the part of a man who can pulp other humans with his bare hands, despite the wild grimaces and the angry howls.
The maximum fun is had by Asin, nicely curved and rounded, very far from unreal size zeroes, making her Hindi cinema debut. She plays pretty much the same role as she did in the original-- loud, warm, emotional, and is the best part of the movie, but even she can't liven up the pallid songs-and-dances. Third lead Jiah Khan, the medical student who studies the amnesiac and ends up first hindering then helping him, is a total loss-- she has to speak Hindi and do an item number, and both are beyond her. The villain (Pradeep Rawat) looks like he's a bit part stretched into something he can't quite handle: is he the only one they could find?
Too long, at three hours and some. Too violent. The bad guy goes around wielding a rusted iron jack and bashing peoples' heads in. And so not Aamir: ‘Ghajini' is engaging, only intermittently. Can we please have our old Aamir, the actor-star who's taught present-day mainstream Bollywood to think, back again?

it is amazing to hear about that kind of story ever...Inspirational even it is all about immorality thats the point right
i love both of the actors and their acting toooooooooooooooooooooo much and the movie was fantastic, marvellous, remarkable, sweet, funny, imotional and lovely lovely and lovely.
aamir n asin are brilliant.but there were a lot of loopholes in that movie.it could have better.
i love this movie and also like the character of amir, the six packs of amir khan is the very best, i also made the hair cut of amir's i see this movie first tie in the theatre
I absolutely loved the movie and I still can't believed I've never seen it before...I also can't believe that it hasn't been as famous as Slumdog Millionaire - I thought it was actually better and the story was absolutely beautiful - I've cried and laughed and thoroughly enjoyed the whole 3 hours of it. Well done to the director, the actors...everybody
hi, guys................ HaVe a nIcE dAy..........

Well I have read some comments on this thread about Ghajin ... some of you are saying it is crap and some saying its excellent. To me when ever we see a movie act or (made) by Amir we except something different. Thats what he is doing constantly for the six years or so. So if he tried to be a macho and eight packs instead of six packs that is welcomed i should say. Because we are tired of seeing same old soap opera type movie. Anyways long story short you dont have to love everything a performer does. I liked the movie because here i have seen a macho Amir. Yeah it could be better. Specially to me Amir's dialogs are not that good. Well what can you say half the movie he was a nut case. I loved Zia Khan's character. Asin was very good. Well come on why we concerned if Amir has done a good movie or not because thats what he does best he gives us interesting movies. Not just soap opera.

a superb movieit deserves an oscar
Going by what my mind says, this wasn't too bad either. I watch movies, and can watch a movie 15 times (Max.) if my heart and brain say so at the same time, But this can not pull me after 2(1 Was on home cable, 1 was in dolby theatre). nothing was too appealing. A good effort though..Aamir has done his best(Whatever he can do to up the level of the movie). Aasin was supurb (Atleast a fresh talent), was loud at times, but atleast she can make you laugh..
Ghajini is really a heart touching movie.. i saw it in both language...but Amir khan is superb... Asin did it in a fantastic movie..i literally cried..it touched my heart...jiya khan was average... Music was super hit amazing... southful..Rahman rocks... Kaise mujhe song was fantastic....Shreya Goshal's voice rendered...Alka Yagnik can sing better this song Kaise Mujhe...overall super super hit movie.... Amir Rocks!!!!!!!!!!
This is the best movie i've ever seen, as per many saying here, its a remake of tamil version, but use your mind and think its a remake of blockbuster and yet its a blockbuster, Aamir khan i love you man, you are the real khan, you have proved again
This is the best review of Ghajini I have read on the internet so far. I agree with every single word in this review. The movie was way too violent, and Asin is the best part of it. It was also a tad bit illogical in places, and unconvincing.
The movie was ok but what i liked in the movie was amir khan's lifestyle. Asin is fabolous and so is Amir. If movies like Singh is Kinng and Om Shanti Om can be blockbusters i don't see any fault in this one. 3/5
Who the helll wrote this crap review?? The movie was fantastic. One of the best indian movies I have seen. Why do u guyz compare Aamir to his other movies? Treat it individually. Do you guyz want indian movies just to look the same? CAn't you accept something different? Look at the holloywood movies. If they had something like this then you would sing praises but if we try it, you critice for it not being realistic. It's a "MOVIE" - so don't compare it to anything. I loved this movie...Thumbs up!! All the best Aamir..
I had to leave the movie early to catch a plane....how does it end? Is our hero victorious? Does he fall in love with the medical student?
I completely agree with the review. The movie had a LOT of loopholes. Very little logic - memory loss conveniently happens when he has beaten up the goons, he remembers to gym and keep up his body, he for some reason forgets asin despite having short term memory loss and not complete amnesia, the police officer decides to read the diary while the criminal is tied up....I can list LOTs more instances. Music was too loud, girl was too talkative. Snarling and behaving like an animal doesn't count for good acting. It was a waste of more than 3 hrs.
Total Bakwas, waste of time. Cant even express, waste of time and Money.
Bakwas, film, totaly waist of time and money. Watch some cartoons on tv but dont watch this movie.
This is movie not up to the mark, i had lot of expectations from Amir, but this is not his kind of movie, Movie just OK
Ghajini was a treat - not only was Aamir superb, but Asin too fitted perfectly into the character. I have seen the tamil verison featuring Surya - which also i would say is equally good. Jiah is the only misfit here :)The intensity of Aamir is too good .. action scenes are what typical bollywodd movies are made of :)I am also a fan of the villian (i dnt know the name of the actor)- man he the typical cold hearted kind!
