Gilani likens Kashmir to Palestine

Posted: Feb 13, 2010 at 1139 hrs IST

Islamabad Equating the Kashmir issue with the Palestine problem, Pakistan Premier Yousuf Raza Gilani has claimed that peace will remain elusive in South Asia and the Middle East unless these matters are resolved.

Gilani made the remarks during a meeting with visiting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas here last evening.

The resolution of the Palestine issue "finds resonance in the just and peaceful struggle of Kashmiri people for self-determination," Gilani claimed.

"People of Palestine and ... Kashmir are fighting for their just right of self-determination," he said.

Gilani assured Abbas that Pakistan will continue to have a principled stance of absolute support to Palestinian people for their right to self-determination and a sovereign state.

Pakistan wants the total withdrawal of Israel from all occupied Arab territories, including Jerusalem, stoppage of all measures like construction of settlements and a separation wall, excavation beneath the Al-Aqsa mosque and eviction of Palestinians from their homes, he said.

Gilani also expressed disappointment at the current stalemate in the Middle East peace process.

He said peace will remain elusive in South Asia and Middle East unless Kashmir and Palestine issues are resolved.

In a separate meeting with Abbas, President Asif Ali Zardari said Pakistan will continue to extend unequivocal and unreserved support to Palestinian people for the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state.

This is a joke by AS RAKA on 15 Feb 2010

Kashmir is an issue of administration but Palestine is about uprooting the ingenious people by Israel. India was never trying to expel the Kashmiris from their homes. This gentleman needs some schooling.

Pak Double Game by Raj on 14 Feb 2010

Pakistan should first look at thier own internal affairs (big mess !!!) and the freedom they provide to thier own citizens and stop worrying about people in Kashmir. What about Kashmiri pandits who were driven out of Kashmir by Pak sponsered terrorists? Pak should stop sponsoring the terrorrists and then talk about about peace process.

Kettle calling the crow Black! by BG Subhash on 14 Feb 2010

Gilani`s statement is like kettle calling the CROW BLACK!For Gilani K appears like Palestine. Converse is also true ie Pak/Gilani/ISI/Army/LeT/Taliban/Al quaida is responsible for creating many palestines. What about your cruel activities in Afghanistan? What about 26/11,9/11,london/spain bombings. Is K responsible for 9/11, london/spain /Afghan bombings Are you guys not ashamed of pakistan being the home of original terrorists. Gilani kindly spare your citizens as they are going through hell when they leave the shores of pakistan. Today the whole world looks with suspicion on people holding pakistan passport.Do you realize how much tension your citizens are going through? If you are carrying on activities like this for another 2/3 years please don`t be surprised if the whole world imposes a boycott on pakistan directly or indirectly. Incidentally it is about the time the world should look at boycotting pakistan in the Trade forums first.

gilani compares kashmir to palastine by aum on 14 Feb 2010

This napaki pm is ignorant He does not know the problem of palastine Does he know his own country's problem??? The problem is narrow nindedness of islam that hampers the development of that country,mr napk pm of our rough neighbor napkistan come out of ignorance and your misleading lies and start thinking about your poor people and forget KASHMIR the part you have captured from INDIA during our anti national rule will be taken back so worry about the part that you are occupying and stop brueing terrorism your country is a terrorist country so you have no right to point your rotten finger at INDIA Vande Matram

Desh Premi by JK on 14 Feb 2010

Indian Army should march to Pakistan and Garland this ULLoo Gilani with a nice Garland made out of Torn Shoes and send Laloo Prasad to take care of this Idiot.

Pakistan's Lies by Major (Retd) Virendra Sharma on 14 Feb 2010

The Pakistan government and the common people feel that by repeating lies again and again they will be able to convince the world that they are speaking truth. They think that the people's memory is short and they can sell their stupid theories. Pakistan must be told in most unambiguous manner that the only issue concerning the state of J&K is the vacation of the illegally occupied portion of it under their possession. There is no other issue.

GILANI IS RIGHT ! by Ajay on 14 Feb 2010

Gilani is a 100 % right ! Both Kashmir and Palestine are lands OCCUPIED by Muslims through military conquest. There will be no peace until the ISLAMIC OCCUPIERS return Palestine to the Jews, and Kashmir to the Hindus !!!

Why do Indians support Pak? by Ash on 14 Feb 2010

People like SRK and Saif encourage Pak, and that helps Pak to divide India further. Why do Indians support Pak, at their own detriment?

Professor Emeritus by Dr. D. Prithipaul on 14 Feb 2010

Gilani is right. Just as Israel should withdraw from the Western Bank, so must Pakistan withdraw from the part of Kashmir which it occupies. Just as Israel should refrain from exerting undue violence upon the Palestinians, so must Pakistan refrain from carrying out an asymmetric, endemic war against India over Kashmir. And just as Mahmoud Abbas's Palestinians should not pour rockets upon the Israelis,so must Gilani have his terrorist henchmen refrain from hurting Indians as the sacred Islamic duty of visiting terrible dooms upon Kaffirs.

Also, both matters were invented--and thus non-resolvable! by Devasahayam on 14 Feb 2010

As I stated earlier, "Palestine" issue was invented by Syrian-descended Jerusalem mufti (through appointment by British--as he was not even literate enough to qualify on-own) Haj-amin Husseini--and then kept propagated after 1964 (Husseini died in 1974 in Beirut) by his protege Yasir Arafat, an Egyptian with a Syrian mother who was distantly related to the mufti (in other words, Arafat was not "Palestinian" except by his own phony claim). Likewise, Kashmir issue was invented by Pakistan when its proxies attacked and plundered the state--in an attempt to force its ruler to merge with Pakistan--and forced his hand to merge it with India. Pakistan never represented Kashmiri (anymore than ifrepresented Muslim Bengalis--to which the truth was exposed by Naziesque behaviour of its soldiers in 1971). As for "resolution", the ONLY correct one would be the BINNING of both issues--as both are invalid!

It is Hindustan mercy tha Pak still exists as a country by Rakesh narayan on 13 Feb 2010

Let Mr.Gilani says this kind of utter words, this is India's mercy that Pakistan still on earths surface! These fools cannot realize this fact! The evils always will be in earth since the time of adam and eve as serpant it acted! Now in Asia, the evil land is Pakistan. For the sake of earthe there should be evil forces in earth. This is too creation of God to know the value of peace and happyness for human. If this kind of forces are not in earth, how can a human respect Gods existence!! WE wish good luck to Pakis in their life ahead!!!!

Gilani and Palestine by Anjana on 13 Feb 2010

It shows how ignorant Gilani is about global matters. While Palestanians are displaced, in Kashmir, Muslims have forced Kashmiri Pandits to become refugee in their own country. This is hightime, Muslim community should learn to live with other people with tolerance and in peace.

Kashmir by Vimalan on 13 Feb 2010

Wishful thinking. By investing their energy and money on Kashmir, Pak is digging a bigger hole which they can never get out of this. India is prepared for any onslaught from Pak on Kashmir isuue. India withstood Pak pressure even during 80' and early 90's when she was at her weakest point in terms of economy. With robust economy, India is well-prepared to tackle this mess from our misguided neighbour.

It was Pakistan who inspired Israel by Billy P Domes on 13 Feb 2010

How can the "Israel" of South Asia, namely, Pakistan equate itself with Palestine? If Israel is alleged to have displaced Palestinians from their homeland, so did Pakistan. It is universally known that over the past 63 years since its independence in 1947, Pakistan in pursuit of its diabolic state policy has sanitized itself of its minorities like the Hindus, Christians and others. In 1947,according to statement made by Pakistan Peoples%u2019 Party MP Aitzaz Ahsan in 2006, twenty per cent of Pakistan's population was non-Muslim. This figure is reduced today %u201Cto about a mere two per cent,%u201D he said. I%u2019m inclined to believe that it was from Pakistan that Israel derived inspiration to formulate its much reviled Palestinian policy. If Palestinians can claim the right to return to their home land in Israel, the millions of Hindus, Christians and others too, who were brutally driven out of Pakistan, have the right to return to their ancestral land in that country.

Don't worry Gillani, soon there won't be a Pakistan by Zico on 13 Feb 2010

Suicide bombing, shooting, attacks on civilians, kidnapping and murder have almost become synonymous with life in Pakistan. No one like to live there. It has turned into a nuclear storage house for the chinese since Pakistan has no technical knowhow to build anything. The mercenaries in army and ISI have a thriving motel business for criminals from all over the globe. President and prime minister there are mere puppets of the crime syndicate. Every province is rebelling to separate. US and NATO already have the Pakistani government on probation. What a pity! No wonder Gillani is projecting his attention outside and talking about India and Israel since there is nothing good going on for Pakistan. Given opportunity, everyone in Pakistan would like to have asylum in progressive places like India or Israel. It is a matter of time before Pakistan explodes into non-existence.

GOD by sunil on 13 Feb 2010

Cant we get rid of Pakistan. Undo the partition and everybody will live in peace.

Settle your own house by Divya on 13 Feb 2010

Mr. Gilani you right, India is suffering terrorism in name and from Pakistan right from 1947. The boundries are fixed and Pakistan should first leave Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir and then try to talk about the rights of Kashmiris. You cannot settle your house by pointing a finger to others. Please ask your friends and advisers to study well Kashmir problem and UN resolutions.

Kashmir problem. by R.Sitaraman on 13 Feb 2010

Kashmir problem should be solved once for all. Should not look for outside help particularly from US. A limited military engagement is a must. We have already lost 60 years. No more draining of taxpayers money on Kashmir. Special status should be withdrawn.

How stupid of Gilani !! by amol on 13 Feb 2010

Gilani just does not want to have peace. Everytime India shows signs of talks, these ediot pakistani premier wakes up to dig out the Kashmir problem. He should just realize that his country is nothing worse than a begger (and cheater too) of the world who just survives on others donations. If he is happy being like that, he is a stupid.

Kashmiris should be given right of self determination by sajid on 13 Feb 2010

Kashmiris should be given right of self determination. This declaration was given by the U.N decades before. Indian occupation of Kashmir is unfair and unjustified. The world largest democracy is having disputes with all its neighbors. Ultimately Indians will have to leave the Kashmir otherwise violance will not stop and they will be treated on merit as always.

Balochistan should be given right of self determination by Balochi on 14 Feb 2010

Balochis deserve freedom from the oppression of the Pakistani regime.

Kashmir is part of the Indian secular democracy by dijas on 14 Feb 2010

Kashmiri Indians don't have any special reason to secede from India, than say Bihari Indians or MP Indians, or anyone else. In India's J&K, Kashmiri Indians enjoy full democratic rights and they can potentially even send a prime minister to rule all of India. Such is not the case in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and China-occupied Kashmir, where the people have no democratic rights. Pakistani fiefdom uses PoK resources and simply does not do anything to make the lives of the people there better. All of King Hari Singh's princely state of Kashmir became a part of the democratic union of India when he signed the instrument of accession on october 26-27 of 1947. Pakistan and China should immediately vacate the land of Kashmir they are illegally occupying, and Pakistan must be forced by the international community to shutdown all of its terrorist camps, and thus allow India to develop the state in peace. That's what is in the best interests of the Kashmiri Indian people as well as regional peace.

Kashmir Self Determination by Sajid on 14 Feb 2010

welcome your suggestion.A plebicite in entire Pak will result in integration with India(Probably except NWFP/Army/Fuedel Lords). If you want separate plebicite in Kashmir, that also welcome but ensure all forcefully expelled people should return(Example Pandits...etc). Another aspect is then the decision on religious minoreties in India and the secular status of INdia also need to be considered thru a Nation wide(India) Plebicite.

END THE ISLAMIC OCCUPATION! by AJAY on 14 Feb 2010

Sajid, Palestine is land that historically belongs to the Jews, NOT to the Islamic OCCUPIERS. Similarly, Kashmir was STOLEN from the Hindus by the Islamic invaders. They both must be restored to their rightful owners!

END THE ISLAMIC OCCUPATION by Ajay on 14 Feb 2010

Sajid, the ROOT CAUSE of the problems is the OCCUPATION! THE ISLAMIC OCCUPATION. The only just solution will be when the Muslims return the lands stolen from the Hindus- the ORIGINAL NATIVES of the land.

Kashmiris should be given right of self determination by Major (Retd) Virendra Sharma on 14 Feb 2010

Sajid, do not try to mislead people. The UN in it's resolution of 1948 had specifically ordered Pakistan to vacate the portion of the J&K state under it's army control before the plebiscite could take place. Did Pakistan remove it's forces from the parts of the J&K illegally held by it? Talk sense, talk TRUTH.

Kashmiris go to PAK by Vinu Kumar on 14 Feb 2010

Kashmiris (only Muslims) do have right of self determination - just go to Pakistan or Saudi Arabiya or any other - Muslim country. Please use your human right to get out from India. This will solve all the problems.

Self Determination by A. Pradeep on 13 Feb 2010

Here are a few Islamic countries that have the right of self determination: Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Libya,Egypt, Yemen, Somalia, Ethopia. You had better rethink you halucinations.

Kasmir self determination by Vijay on 13 Feb 2010

Yes after Pakis leave occupied Kasmir we are waiting for them to leave

Two Years Military Rule Will Be Enough To Resolve Kashmir Issue. by Bharat on 13 Feb 2010

There is a quick fix in resolving Kashmir provided Kashmir is handed over to Indian Army just for two years. A sub-area commander in J&K can be entrusted the job targetting violence & insurgency. The brigadier will come out victorious, and Kashmir will live in eternal peace thereafter.

May be.. by Rahul Pandey on 13 Feb 2010

And I hope by Kashmir, you mean whole of Kashmir. Including POK, Jammu, Laddakh, and kashmir Valley

SIMILARITIES WITH PALESTINE by Pushpinder Singh Harsh on 13 Feb 2010

Since he seems to have studied Palestine problems, Gilani needs to recognise that actually Baluchistan is very similar to Palestine. If Israel is rough in dealing with Palestine, Pakistan is ruthless in dealing with Baluchistan. Gilani should sort out his nation's problem with Baluchistan, rather than posturing about an integral part of India.

What a tragedy!!! by Uday on 13 Feb 2010

Well said, Harsh. Pakistan is synonymous with propaganda and disinformation. They have reached the lowest level and dont know how to extricate themselves from there. The guy's mind is on Kashmir when Pakistan is slipping from his grip. What a tragedy!!!

Kashmir like Palestine - Gilani by A. Pradeep on 13 Feb 2010

How we wish Kashmir was like Palestine and India was like Israel! There would be no Pakistan.......Sigh!

Mr Gilani has a point there by observer on 13 Feb 2010

Gilani is right, the virtual elimination of Kashmiri Pandits after murdering their males and threatening to abduct their females makes Kashmir certainly look like Palestine!Even today none of the Pak supported Kashmiri separatists talk of the artocities on Pandits. All they talk about is revenge for Gujrat but total silence when Muslims are killed in Pakistan and in Kashmir in India by Taliban terrorists.

Pakistan by Azim on 13 Feb 2010

Pakistan is itself is a Palestine. Already divided by ethnic lines

list just grows by nidhi on 13 Feb 2010

Gilani should have added- Balochistan and FATA as well to the list of Palestine and Kashmir and maybe even Tibet!

Palestine and Gilani by Shilp Kumar on 13 Feb 2010

Best Response..Add Tibet, FATA, Baloochistan to the list of Palestine
