"Parliament is a reflection of the people and their aspirations. We will work for the supremacy of Parliament. We will make Parliament supreme in policy-making," he told reporters shortly after filing his nomination papers for tomorrow's contest which he is sure to win.

Replying to a question on whether he would maintain a working relationship with Musharraf or ask him to step down, Gillani merely said, "I'll follow the Constitution."

On whether he was nominated for the post of premier for only an interim period, Gillani said, "I can only say that the PPP has reposed confidence in me. And the party will decide how long it wants me to serve."

"We are here to deliver.... We are not here to count how many days we have (left) in the assembly."

Ending a month-long suspense, the Pakistan People's Party, which emerged the largest group in last month's general election, yesterday named 55-year-old Gillani as its Prime Ministerial candidate for the coalition government to be formed with the support of the PML-N, Awami National Party and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam.
