Girl found dead, police say suicide

Kolkata, February 19 The fear of failing in the Madhyamik examination for the second time apparently forced an 18-year-old girl to commit suicide in Malda. Sampa Sarkar, a resident of Danga Para under the Habibpur police station, reportedly jumped in front of a running train on Tuesday morning.

Police said her body was found on the railway tracks near the Bulbul Chandi railway station in Malda around 7.15 am. She was to write her Life Science papers on Tuesday. Police said Sampa’s father Dilip Sarkar is a constable posted at the Suti police station in Murshidabad. He has been informed.

The police have registered a case of unnatural death and started investigation. They said her preparation might not have been up to the mark and she feared she would fail once again.

Sampa, a student of RN Roy Girls’ Higher Secondary School in Bulbul Chandi, had taken the Madhyamik exam last year also but failed. She could not score the minimum marks required in the science group.

On Tuesday morning, the police said, Sampa told her mother that she was going out to a friend to share notes. Within half an hour, her body was found.

“We have sent the body for postmortem. Once the report comes in, it would be clear whether this is a case of suicide or something else,” said a senior officer of the Malda police.
