Jalandhar, January 17 A 20-Year-old married girl, Puja, landed in the psychiatric ward of the Civil Hospital today, after alleged mental and physical torture by her in-laws.

Shobha Rani, widow and mother of the victim, alleged that ever since her daughter got married to Chander Sharma of Basti Sheikh about 10 months back, her in-laws tortured her, saying that she didn't know household work. She alleged that her husband and his family used to beat her up brutally. "Three days back, they left Puja on road outside her house in Model House area in a bad condition…even her clothes were torn," rued her mother. She added that for the past three days, Puja has been mentally upset and was behaving abnormally.

A complaint has been lodged at police division five, where the case is still under investigation, said SHO Yogi Raj. No one from her in-laws could be contacted.

Dr Aman Sood of the Civil Hospital said Puja was in a state of acute psychosis and stress. She would take three to four weeks to recover.
