Chidambaram

New Delhi Voicing concern over the loss of lives in embattled Sri Lanka, India on Wednesday asked the LTTE to lay down arms and come to the negotiating table while urging Colombo to suspend hostilities.

"We are deeply anguished at the loss of lives. We are not happy that the Sri Lankan government has resumed hostilities. It is for both sides to cease hostilities," Union Home Minister P Chidambaram said.

Replying to questions, he said the Sri Lankan government must suspend hostilities and the LTTE must lay down arms.

"This must happen simultaneously. It requires both hands to clap. Unfortunately, we are not able to prevail over the LTTE to lay down arms and not able to prevail over the Sri Lankan government beyond a point. We once again appeal to both sides to give up hostilities and come to the negotiating table," the Home Minister said.

Observing that the Central government was ‘very deeply concerned’ about the goings on in Sri Lanka, he said External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon had visited Colombo.

"We were able to prevail upon Sri Lanka to pause hostilities for 48 hours. We were disappointed that there was no response from the LTTE. Even today there is no response from the LTTE," he said.

To a question about the possibility of LTTE cadres sneaking into the Indian territory, Chidambaram said the Centre has sensitised the Tamil Nadu Government on the matter and the LTTE was a banned organisation in India.

"The Tamil refugees will be dealt with according to the extant policy," he said.

Asked about protests by some political parties in Tamil Nadu on the ongoing conflict in the island nation, Chidambaram said the Centre and the state government ‘have done, are doing and will continue to do whatever is in our capacity’.

Lankan War by Shahul on 17 Feb 2009

India should take the military action against srilanka ,then it can ask both of them to lay down the arms to negotiate .the political parties in TN is no way useful for speech Only the military top brass of Indian force can solve the problem(No Politician Incl Cong and BJP are useful for speech in the central)To solve the problem Primirily THE LTTE should take action as war on the people of SL as they do on us(Tamils)

India is all talk and no walk. by Rex on 07 Feb 2009

Screw pacifism. That's all we know, and look where that got us, with Pakistan. There is a time for talks and a time for action, and it is great that the SL govt. is finally rooting out the LTTE after enduring their terrorism for nearly 3 decades.Look at how our policy of 'talks' is floundering with Pakistan, whose leaders are far more aggressive and media savvy, and keep pusing their viewpoint to the Western media. Then again, we have more important things to do, like blocking girls from attending pubs.

ELAM by Sivarasan on 06 Feb 2009

It is Indian jokers interference by clandestinely sendinding IPKF and inflicting damage that has put LTTE in disadvantageous position. Now talking about noninterference is stupidity and fraud on Tamils. It is Aryan conspiracy executed through Congress( After all Congress was Aryan party- Now BJP has taken pver that provilage). Both Congress and BJP- inshort Aryans are enemy to Tamils. If this understood by all genuine tamils( Not Chidambars,et all), ELAM will certainly be in place.

India Advises by Avinash Baranwal on 06 Feb 2009

India should not talk much. We can not guard our own people and we are advising the world...I am amazed to see the way, Indians are responding.Sri Lankans are showing a better solidarity than India has ever shown. India should learn from others and Must not preach others.

Give Up Hostilities...... by Ratnam Pillai on 05 Feb 2009

The Indian Central Government and the Tamilnadu state Government have taken a very responsible, practical and commendable stand. Enough is enough. Sanity sould prevail. Its time that the rebels listen to India and world opinion, lay down arms, release the innocents and talk to SL Governemnt. Any more manipulations or same old actions of ill-conceived hidden agenda of the rebels would only end in increasing the sufferings of the people. Let this be an eye-opener to the "lawless" lawyer elemens and political hobbysts of Tamilnadu as well.

Sai baba and Dr Kalam...peace angels for SL tamils by kristv on 05 Feb 2009

It seems LTTE does not mind to barter Tamil civilians for their ego. When SL offered 48 hrs time LTTE shd have accepted it.LTTE can never win SL army. it is the fact. No country would support it ,including India. What sort of Men are they to risk lacs of Tamils . the shouting brigade of Vaikos ,nedumarans and tirumas are simply inducing Locals and India can not do anything in this regard. They should have requested their leader Prabakaran to accept peace. Is there any permanant solution other than bringing tamils and singalease ? Use Brain and request the services of Dr Kalams,Saibaba 9who is respected by singala leaders both ruling and opposition) and sri sri.Time for them not the Vaikos.Karunanidi should speak to Dr kalam and sai baba as channel 2 diplomacy .This channel 2 can get more respect than the shouting brigade and they will be able to bring peace,God willing.Let us pray Lord Ranganatha who is at Srirangam looking srilanka. No otherway.....

End of LTTE's Terrorism by Bishnu Prasad Padhi on 05 Feb 2009

Finally nemesis seems to be catching up with Prabhakaran. World's most vicious terrorist who left no stone unturned to achieve his selfish motive of lording over the tamilians and in the process caused incalculable damage to life and property and brutalised an entire generation is hiding like a coward in some plush bunker in the remote jungles of Sri Lanka. He would send every body to death either by bombs or suicide in the name of eelam, but will jealously protect his own life. Like a frankenstein monster, he didn't spare even his benefactors like the late Rajiv Gandhi and Ranasinghe Premadasa. History will never forgive him for his many acts of terrorism and he will be condemned as a criminal who desrves the maximum punishment. Sadly, some politicians in Tamil Nadu are painting him as a hero and glossing over his criminal activities. But in the process they are giving a fillip to criminality. Let us hope Prabhakaran is captured dead or live and the saga of killings come to an end.

Very well Said by Srini on 06 Feb 2009

Very well said. In the name of one leaders death (who was responsibile for numerous rapes and killings), Indian Congress government are on the path to disintegrate India. If India's policy is not to interfere in other countries, why did we enter Pakistan and create Bangladesh?. If this genocide happens to some kulkarnis or kapoors then Congress and Indian Government would have rush to their rescue, but it was hapless tamilians who are getting killed, so who do they care. I wish TN People chase the AIADMK and Congress away from the state in coming elections. Whatever happens, whoever stabs us at the back, Tamil Eelam will blossom one day.
