New Delhi, June 9: BJP on Monday intensified its campaign to demand the recall of Goa Governor S C Jamir by taking the matter to President Pratibha Patil claiming support of over two lakh Goans.

A BJP delegation led by Manohar Parrikar, the leader of the opposition in the Goa assembly, submitted a memorandum to Patil which, it claimed was signed by over two lakh Goans to protest the “reckless and partisan” behaviour of the Governor.

The BJP had initiated the campaign in January after the Governor had prorogued the Assembly session on the advice of the Goa government, which had been reduced to minority due to the resignation of three ministers and withdrawal of support by three other MLAs.

“We request you to kindly enquire into the above episode and initiate appropriate steps to replace the Governor of the state of Goa, in the interest of maintaining high dignity of the post of Governor,” the memorandum said.

The BJP state has organised street corner meetings across the state as a part of its “Jamir Hatao” campaign in the last six months.

“The memorandum is signed by over two lakh Goans in support of the demand,” said Rajiv Pratap Rudy, the BJP leader incharge of party affairs in the state.

“We were forced to initiate this campaign due to reckless and partisan behaviour of the Governor, in the manner not imagined by founding fathers of the Constitution,” Parrikar said after meeting Patil.

The state government headed by Digambar Kamat completed one year in office on June seven -- a period which saw the Chief Minister survive two coup attempts by his detractors.
