God man shoots, injures himself in the process

Aluva (Kerala), May 17: A self-styled godman Himaval Maheswara Bhadranand, accused of threatening journalists of a local newspaper, tried to shoot himself in police station in Kerala but escaped with injuries after the police snatched the gun from him.

A tense situation prevailed at the Aluva police station as police grappled with Bhadrananda alias Ernakulam Swami to take the weapon from him.

In the ensuing melee, two shots were fired one of which injured his left palm.

The entire incident took place before a strong contingent of mediapersons as Bhadrananda had called up a television channel journalist and informed her that he was going to commit suicide. She informed her office which in turn called up the police.

A police team, which rushed to his house, brought him to the police station with the loaded gun in his possession.

On seeing the media persons, Bhadrananda tried to pull the trigger but police managed to snatch the weapon.

Rural SP M Padmanabhan said that two cases—attempt to commit murder and attempt to commit suicide-- have been filed against Bhadrananda.

On Friday, Bhadrananda, who used to move around in a car with a beacon light, surrendered before police after a case was registered against him for trespassing into the office of Malayalam daily Mangalam and threatening its journalists for publishing a series of articles against him.

The incident comes a few days after police registered cases against another self-styled godman Santosh Madhavan alias Amrita Chaitanaya for at least three offences, including raping a minor girl and cheating an NRI woman of Rs 45 lakh.
