Godhra carnage, communal violence pre-planned: Mehta

Gandhinagar, October 30 Former Gujarat Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Suresh Mehta has alleged that the Godhra train burning incident and communal violence that ensued across the State was “pre-meditated and pre-planned”, if one believes in what BJP MLA Haresh Bhatt told a Tehelka reporter during the sting operation which was telecast by Aaj Tak.

Mehta told mediapersons here on Tuesday that Bhatt’s statement “we got many country-made pistols from MP, Bihar and UP, and also ordered two truckloads of swords from Punjab” amply proved that the Godhra train carnage and its violent aftermath was “pre-planned”, and ‘’Chief Minister Narendra Modi had had a pre-knowledge of it’’.

The former CM said it would have taken at least three to four days for the consignments of weapons to reach Gujarat from far-flung states like Punjab, Bihar and UP, which the Godhra MLA said had been distributed among rioters across the State.

“The post-Godhra riots started within hours of the train burning incident. How come that the lethal weapons reached Gujarat from other states so early and were distributed among people to use them in the riots!” wondered Mehta.

The BJP rebel leader also revealed although he was a senior minister in the Modi Cabinet when the Godhra riots occurred, he had not been taken into confidence whenever the chief minister called meetings to discuss the situation arising out of the communal violence then. “Modi used to have meetings only with some his close confidants, and he would never invite me to attend them,” revealed Mehta.
