Kolkata, April 7 To harness the ‘creators and generators of wealth’, whose acts are detrimental to the environment, the state Pollution Control Board should come up with a numbers of “no’s” like the old Soviet Veto, said Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi on Monday.

The “no’s” will be to lobby against those who create wealth for a few and think of short-term profit, said Gandhi at a seminar on ‘Climate Change and Human Health — Risk and Responses’ on the occasion of the World Health Day.

“The WBPCB has not only the power but also the duty to exercise the power. Do not fear that you are overstepping your limitations, because they have already overstepped their limitations,” said Gandhi.

Drawing a parity between the election commission and the PCB, he said that the organisation should be looked at with “respect and benign fear” and be regarded with a “healthy awe”.

The governor who has recently reduced his convoy of vehicles from eight to three said: “It is not enough to accuse the west for increasing global warming, we must also mend our ways of life.”

The Chairman of WBPCB, A N Basu said most of the climate studies are based on a global model, and there is a need to study them locally.

He also mooted the idea of an institute at the state level to study the climate change, where meteorologists, urban planners and environmentalists can come together for interdisciplinary research.

“The research at the organisation will be problem oriented and will advice the government on the adoption and mitigation strategies,” Basu said.

Professor K J Nath, president Indian Institute of Public Health Engineers said, “The leaders involved in urban planning, environmental management, transport and energy supply should be adequately sensitised on this extremely vital issue of global warming affecting the future of mankind.”
