Despite notices and reminders to all the defaulters two months ago, most of the departments have not cleared their dues and some have offered paltry sums. But unlike the 10,000 defaulting consumers (out of the total of 2,10,000 in UT), whose connections have been snapped due to non-payment, governments offices continue to enjoy uninterrupted power supply.
According to UT Engineering Department records, the Punjab and Haryana Civil Secretariat has pending bills of Rs 1.08 crore. Punjab Police offices owe the UT Electricity Department Rs 30.77 lakh. Both the departments have not paid a rupee despite repeated reminders.
MLA Hostel in Sector 4, which had Rs 10 lakh as dues, recently paid Rs 1 lakh to the Electricity Department.
Director, Hospitality, Haryana, office in Sector 3 has yet to clear its dues of Rs 2 lakh, while the office of IG, Haryana Police, has Rs 1 lakh pending dues.
The UT Administration's own departments have huge pending dues. The Electrical Circle, which owes the UT Rs 22 lakh, paid only Rs 5 lakh last month. The Public Health Circle has a pending bill of Rs 7 lakh and Police Department has Rs 3 lakh dues with nil recovery.
Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh, owes the Electricity Department Rs 51 lakh.
The power connection of Mr Burger in Sector 17 had been snapped but the joint has yet to clear its dues of Rs 16 lakh. E-three (second foundation) in Industrial Area, which owed the Electricity Department Rs 4 lakh, has cleared its dues.
At a meeting in December, 2007, former Finance Secretary S K Sandhu had ordered that the pending amount be immediately recovered from defaulters- which were assessed 30,000 out of 2.10 lakh consumers- within 15 days or their power connections be snapped. The connections of only a third of the defaulters have been snapped.
