Kolkata, February 1 Thousands of state government employees will hold a massive demonstration in the city on February 5 against the proposed new pension scheme.

All India State Government Employees’ Federation general secretary Sukomal Sen announced this today. The federation has also planned to held protests in different states on the same day.

Sen said that the decision to hold protests has been taken up in the wake of Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram stating that the new pension scheme will be introduced soon.

“In Kolkata, around 3,000 employees will congregate at Rani Rashmani Avenue at 2 pm on Tuesday. They will arrive at the venue after taking a half-day casual leave. After office hours, hundreds of employees will join the demonstration. Similar demonstrations will also be held at the districts and blocks,” he added.

The federation has put forth a seven-point charter of demands that include scrapping of the proposed PFRDA bill, cancellation of the “illegal appointment” of the pension fund managers, a halt on downsizing the government departments and lifting a ban on recruitment, filling up the existing vacancies in all government departments, educational institutions and undertakings.

“The federation is determined to defeat the conspiracy of foisting the illegal and anti-worker new pension scheme by avoiding parliamentary sanction. It cautions the government not to proceed with the IMF-World Bank-dictated new pension scheme as this will invite unrest and turbulence in the administration of the entire country,” the statement released by the employees' group stated.
