New Delhi, January 16: Government on Wednesday said it was exploring the possibility of providing reservation for minorities in educational institutions and government jobs.

Addressing a conference of the State Minorities Commission, Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil said reservation has been provided for Scheduled Castes and Schedules Tribes in educational institutions and government jobs.

Now there is a demand from minorities also, he said.

"This is what is happening. The question is can it be done. We have to apply our minds to this and try to find out how it can be done in the best possible manner," Patil said adding, ‘whatever can be done for this purpose should be done’.

"We cannot say that it cannot be done. Whatever ingenuity can be used in order to help the people who should be helped in these areas should be taken," the Home Minister said.

"The government is looking into these aspects without coming to the final conclusion," he added.

Patil said that it was the duty of any government to protect the minorities so that the country remains united.

He further said that though there were enough plans and funds for uplift of minorities there was not enough manpower to implement them.

"I am not sure whether we have the machinery to implement these plans and whether the training required to implement them is available," he said.

RESERVATION FOR MINORITIES by N.V.SANKARAN on 17 Jan 2008

The UPA and the secular media call Mr. Modi and the BJP as Hindu fundamentalists who are trying to divide the country on religious basis. Not only religion-based reservation; these people are even planning a special budgetary provision for the minority poor. According to Mr. Soli Sorabjee, former attorney General of India, even providing subsidy for the Haj pilgrimage is a contravention of Article 27 of the Constitution. Yet this is being continued. Why should I, a Hindu, pay for their Haj pilgrimage when the government does not give any subsidy to any Hindu for performing a pilgimage? In Kerala, even part of the Hindu devotees' offerings in the temples goes to contribute such Haj pilgrimage since the temple wealth is managed by the Dewasswam boards which are controlled by the secular government. Yet they call themselves "Secular". They are totally blind or pretending to be blind to the fact that poverty affects not on percentages but affects each individual irrespective of their religion. If a head-count is taken, it can be seen that the Hindu poor will greatly outnumber the entire minority poor. But, who cares? When will the majority community realize this?

So What??? by Savithri Shankar on 17 Jan 2008

It is disgusting that our Indians are so un-secular. Almost every reader here is venemous, and spits venom aganist others. Anyway, let me eat curd rice and go to sleep, as always, and leave the spitting of venom to my friends...BTW, is there anyway, I can make my hubby NOT eat curd rice and go to bed early. He has a passion, rather addiction, for eating curd rice, going to bed early, and not doing his job as my hubby. please help me how to make him get away from this addiction of eating curd rice.

Curd rice by solution on 17 Jan 2008

Did you try eating all teh curd rice by yourself before your hubby can even think about it ?

Congress and Communists converting India into an islamic nation by Mrs Bhaanumati on 17 Jan 2008

UPA is working on a hidden agenda of converting india into an islamic nation.

Nalayak Home Minister by ganesh on 17 Jan 2008

our Nalayak home minister is out to creat division of India in the name of religion. They sow this differentiality in the name of cast/religion. Any person with little sense can judge the pseudo-secularism of Congress/CPM/CPI in the name of empowerment of minority class. Nobody against the development for the minority. But it would have been a better thought if UPA had in their rotten head a little wisdom to think about the poor citizen living under the catogory called majority. Believe me UPA is only champion in making politics using minority card. In reality they did little to minority compared to the previous Government. The worst part is Indian journalist who are totally impotent in ideology to think in this direction.Jai Hind

Patil, Arjun Singh and Man Mohan Singh are islamic communal leaders by Mrs Chaarulata on 17 Jan 2008

I would suggest government should open new colleges, and companies only for muslims and minorities and no hindus should be entertained. This way 100% reservation can be granted to muslims. In fact congress and communists leaders should go to pakistan where 100% reservation exist for muslims. Patil,Arjun Singh and Man Mohan Singh like islamic communal leaders are in great demand in Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Anti majority by Sreenivas on 17 Jan 2008

It's very unfair towards majority. Time will come to contain congress's anti majority attitude.

Bharat Ratna award by gsbhargava on 17 Jan 2008

Re..Inder Malhotra's criticism of Advani for going public with his plea for Bharat Ratna for AB Vajpayee, why should it be a secret affiar? The PM should be able to react openly and freely.

GOVT. FAVOURS by PESHORI AHUJA on 17 Jan 2008

WE APPRECIATE THE MINISTER'S REMARKS THAT SOME THING SHOULD BE DONE FOR MINORITIES. THE MINISTER IS FROM CONGRESS AND TO THE BEST OF OUR KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE, FOR CONGRESS THE MINORITIES ARE DETERMINED IN THE CONTEXT OF RELIGION AND NOT IN THE CONTEXT OF THEIR FINANCIAL POSITION.IN THE ABSENCE OF ANY CLARIFICATION AND BASED ON OUR PAST EXPERIENCE, THE MINISTER'S STATEMENT TENDS TO MEAN THE RELIGIOUS MINORITIES.IF SOME INDEPENDENDAT OBERVER WERE TO ANALYSE THE MINISTER'S STATEMENT , IT WOULD COME TO WHAT MUSLIM LEAGUE WAS PROPAGATING BEFORE PATITION IS NOW BEING DONE BY THE "INDIRA" CONGRESS.

Yes, vote these guys out by Rita on 17 Jan 2008

Why are upper class Hindus treated like criminals? My kids have to struggle 10 times more than others just to get the same seat in a college or for the same job. All because they are not born in SC/ST/Muslim/Cristian/any other minority/politician family. I, for one shall never vote for Congress.

Harsh comment, but reality is ... by withheld on 17 Jan 2008

Best way to sow disunity so that the politicians can remain 'united' in their resolve to loot the country and to sell its sovereignty and honour.

Minority reservations. by Basker M on 17 Jan 2008

Why is this government encouraging conversions? by Suresh on 17 Jan 2008

Why is this government encouraging conversions? These reservations are intended to benefit proselytizing creeds to recruit more and more people into their fold.

Govt.favours reeservation for miniorities by anonymous on 17 Jan 2008

Instead of doing all these gimmicks, i suggest there shall be an IIT in each state only for minorities and pther reservations; there shall be an NIT only for minorities and other reservations; there shall be 9-10 engineering colleges, 2-3 medical colleges, a host of general degree colleges for which the admission is only for minorities and other reservation categoris. This will help them to seek lot of seats. Iif this is accepted, then all other institutions are free from all these reservations issues and the government also happy since no more disucsions on minorities and othere reservations issues will be discussed !!! I do not know where we are heading !! On one side we need highly educated lot and on the other side for negative thinking!!

Reservation for Muslims by Sharad C. Misra on 17 Jan 2008

State Subsidy for Evangelism and Jihad by Anonymous on 17 Jan 2008

So, we have finally done away with a secular state? How many millions did the Evanjelists and Jihadis give to those who matter in UPA that they now have embarked on State Sponsored Evangelism and Jihad?
