Gandhinagar, April 23 In a move that will benefit some 3,300 medical students across the state, the Gujarat government on Wednesday announced that it has implemented a 20 per cent increase in their monthly stipend.

Announcing this, State Health Minister Jai Narayan Vyas told mediapersons that the raise would be made effective from August 2006.

The decision would increase the monthly allowance of students doing medicine, dental, ayurvedic and homoeopathy courses across government-run institutions. It would add Rs 6 crore to the government’s annual salary outgo. The changes have also homogenised slabs for various courses, Vyas said.

"We hope this decision would improve motivation, working conditions and education services available for medical students in the state," the minister said.

Now on, all interns, except those in physiotherapy courses, will get Rs 4,372 per month as against the existing slab of Rs 3,613. Physiotherapy interns, who were getting Rs 2,889 per month, will now get Rs 3,496. Resident doctors will now get Rs 9,623, Rs 10,104, Rs 10,785, Rs 11,082 in their first, second, third, and fourth years. Senior residents will get Rs 13,401, Rs 16,316 and Rs 18,690 for their first, second, and third years. The slab will be same for post-graduate students of all courses. Diploma students will now get Rs 5,858 and Rs 6,182 for their first and second years respectively.
