New Delhi Shifting from its earlier stand, the government indicated on Tuesday that it may allow the IITs and IIMs to open campuses in foreign countries.

Minister of State for Human Resource Development D Purandeswari told the Rajya Sabha that government would be open to idea of allowing the IITs and IIMs to set up campuses in foreign countries once they improve their faculty positions.

The government had earlier turned down a proposal of IIM Bangalore to open a campus in Singapore. The HRD Ministry did not agree to the proposal saying that the Memorandum of Association of IIM, Bangalore, does not empower the institute to open campuses abroad.

The Minister said that it may not be immediately feasible for the IITs and IIMs to open campuses abroad as they are facing faculty shortages and have to undertake 54 per cent expansion in their intake to implement OBC quota.

Setting of campuses abroad may further strain the IITs' limited manpower and other resources, Purandeswari said in a written reply.

She said various MOAs of the IIMs will need to be amended because these MOAs do not empower them to open campuses abroad.

Replying a separate question, the minister said the government has received suggestions that while increasing the overall number of seats by 54 per cent in IITs, increase in number of seats in individual disciplines may not be insisted upon.

It may be decided by taking into account the popularity, demand and importance of the disciplines. The suggestions are under consideration of Ministry of Law and Justice, Purandeswari said.

This is a big distraction by Sameer on 25 Jul 2009

Managing different campuses in different countries is a BIG distraction. Waste of time. Just concentrate on your own single campus and do it perfectly. Kill these useless ideas in their infancy. Who comes up with such stupid ideas?

IIT by Vedanarayanan Andnallur on 24 Jul 2009

I am unable to understand how shortage of faculties will affect opening of IIT and IIM campus abroad. Qualified candidates already in foreign soil would like to occupy the positions....unless the Politicians in India want to export OBCs to these institutions. The Govt should go fast towardsthis goal and this would further increase the reputation of the Institutions.

Will reservations based on caste still hold good in foreign by Raman on 23 Jul 2009

Faculty shortage is only for IIT. When so many private insitutes are able to get resources why this shortage is only for IIT. It is because of the fact that the persons sitting there are interested to allow any other persons other tahn Forward community. Hence the shortage. It is not the questions of reservation, but the caste feeling in the top structure of IIT. It is deep in their Blood and it has to be washed away

Ohh Sumeet! Thanks for reminding positive side of quota system. I have an idea, instead of quota in colleges; govt. should run seperate colleges for these so called OBC's. By doing that, quality of institutions like IIT and IIMs will not affected these OBC's who think that quota is their birth right will also get free or subsidized

Yes Sir (Vedanarayanan Andnallur), you are absolutly right that in forign countries there are so many intelligent students are there who can serve the newly oipen IIT and IIMS, but in that also the SC/ST and OBC students are also numbered. Knowledge dosent see the cast as u are thinking...So, be faithful towards, your nation..

We are ready to teach the world! Education at Home is Take care of. by Lalu on 23 Jul 2009

It seems our government has decided to take care of those backward foreigners as we have already provided more than sufficient opportunity to Indians at home. Opening of IIT Campuses aborad means they are able to take care of all young Indian aspirants. In that case, the 50% quota for OBC/SC/ST should not be required as every worthy and interested student can walk in one of the IITs.

I have a son who is studying 1st class. Will he be able to get a seat with reservations when he grows up. Politicians, please look into the matter and do the needed as you always do. It would be great if you can also fund his flight tickets and acoomodation (also, pocket money for his enjoyment) at the expense of the so called upper class. Ohh sorry, I forgot, you already do that in India. I am pretty sure you will do that in other countries too.Jai hind.
