"I am hopeful that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Finance Minister P Chidambaram will take appropriate steps considering the problems of farmers in different regions of the country," Gandhi said while addressing a farmers' rally in Osmanabad in the Marathwada region.
Gandhi said after the Budget many sections felt that the benefits should be granted to farmers having larger land holdings in regions like Vidarbha and Marathwada, where farmers suicides have been witnessed in the past years.
"This issue was raised in Parliament by many MPs including Rahul Gandhi to extend the benefits and therefore I hope that the government will take appropriate steps," Gandhi said, in a reference to the recent speech made by her son and AICC General Secretary.
Speaking on the loan waiver, Gandhi said the government had got the feeling that farmers were a unhappy and worried lot due to which the exemption was announced.
The loan waivers are expected to benefit four crore farmers across the country.
In an apparent reference to the recent campaign by Raj Thackeray-led MNS against the north Indian community in the state, the UPA Chairperson said, "Each corner of our motherland belongs to the people of the country and all of us must stay in harmony."
Commenting on BJP's criticism that UPA government was soft on terrorism, Gandhi said, "Terrorism is a very important issue and we do not need anybody's certificate."
Referring to BJP's prime ministerial candidate L K Advani, she said, "Such statements are unfortunately coming from a former Home Minister during whose tenure our Parliament was attacked by terrorists."
In her twelve-minute-long speech, Gandhi also praised the Vilasrao Deshmukh government in Maharashtra saying they were adhering to the policies of the Congress for growth and development.
Gandhi rubbished opposition BJP's charge that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was soft on terror saying, "terrorism is a serious issue and we are taking all possible efforts to fight it and we do not need anyone's certificate."
Referring to BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate in next general elections L K Advani, she said "it is unfortunate that these comments come from a former Home Minister during whose tenure the terrorists had attacked Parliament."
In an apparent reference to the violent anti-north Indian campaign in the state last month by Raj Thackeray-led MNS, the UPA Chairperson said each corner of the motherland belongs to every citizen of the country and all must stay in harmony.
The Congress President praised the Vilasrao Deshmukh government in Maharashtra saying it was adhering to the party's principles of growth and development. The remarks assume significance amidst reports of leadership change in the state.
Gandhi said Congress has always been in the forefront of doing justice to backward sections of society and listed the new initiatives in the budget for upliftment of minorities, Scheduled Castes and Tribes, labourers in unorganized sector, anganwadi workers, senior citizens and women.
Gandhi said the growth rate has steadily increased in the United Progressive Alliance's nearly four years of rule but Congress would not be satisfied till it (growth) translated into development of all sections of society.

I sincerely believe, hope and pray that the scheme will get implemented on a war footing with total sincerity, honesty and integrity on the part of its implementers on the ground so as to have an immediate as well as a lasting positive effect on the economic condition of many a farmers who also might have contemplated suicide before the announcement of this much needed egalitarian measure and who might now be saved from that fate.
since he did not have a ‘complete’ solution to all the problems of all the farmers in distress! To conclude, this budget has certainly brought smiles on the faces of most of the small and marginal farmers who were truly under a state of unprecedented economic distress from the last several years and they are all only getting the much needed succor now through the ‘loan waiver scheme’ announced by the FM. The relief being offered now was in fact overdue from the UPA government and incidentally, most of the Opposition Parties had been making a loud demand for it themselves. This was in deed a need of the hour and has certainly not come a day sooner.I sincerely believe, hope and pray that the scheme will get implemented on a war footing with total sincerity, honesty and integrity on the part of its implementers on the ground so as to have an immediate as well as a lasting positive effect on the economic condition of many a farmers who also might have contemplated suicide before
(3)This route of a ‘Loan Waiver’ may make the farmers ‘addicted’ to such relief measures and they may ‘demand’ more such sops in the future.Against (3): This is purely a presumption on the part of the critics who are presuming and asserting simultaneously as a ‘last word’ that some 4 crore Farmers will develop a ‘Perpetual Dependency Syndrome’ and will start ‘demanding’ more such schemes in the future. past ‘experience or data’ to support it.The fourth and slightly ‘inexplicably funny’ argument being commonly proffered by most of the critics is:(4)This scheme is ‘limited’ to waiver of farmers loan taken from public sector banks and does not provide complete relief to the farmers since many of these farmers are indebted with loans taken from the private moneylenders also!Against (4) : This is clearly a specious argument and amounts to castigating the FM by asserting once again that he had no business to attempt any emergency ‘partial’ relief since
The Public Sector banks have been promised appropriate financial remedies over the next few years by Finance Minister so that they will be able to cushion this waiver of loans. In any case these loans that are being waived through this scheme now were in fact ‘bad debts’ for the banks without much hope of realization in the near future at least. (2)It would have been better if ‘indirect and long term’ relief measures had been taken in a ‘holistic’ manner resulting in reduction of ‘input costs’ for the farmers and in provisioning of ‘remunerative prices’ for their produce.Against (2) – With already 60, 000, Farmers Suicides reported in the past five years, if the FM / UPA had continued to dither and act only in favor of ‘financially prudent’ – Long Term Indirect Relief measures alone,I am sure that during the Four to five years of gestation period of those schemes, we would have encountered more than 60, 000 farmers suicides additionally WaiverSchemeWill PREVENTsuch TRAGEDY
A spate of articles and letters is appearing in all the national dailies criticizing the 60,000 Cr. Farmer’s loan waiver Scheme announced by the FM in the union Budget 2008-09, calling it a populist measure taken with an eye on the UPA’s prospects in the next General Election due in about an year.A few arguments that are appearing centrally in all those criticisms appear to be:(1)This amounts to only a ‘Huge Sop’ and will only provide short-term relief and that too, not to all the farmers who are in distress. This does not provide any long-term benefit or solution to their fundamental problems. Also, this may ‘badly affect’ the performance of the Nationalized Banks who are being called to ‘write off’ these ‘bad loans’. Against (1), I have only this to say that ‘emergency and distress situations’ do call for equally ‘drastic, direct and ICU-Treatment’ type measures and that is precisely what this ‘Farmers Loan Waiver scheme’ is attempting.
I simply cannot help laughing, because when the sanghis took bribes for asking questions in the the parliament then it was like selling ice cream to the eskimos.Nautankee, you are too good, your point is too clear.
romesh.sharma is a German citizen and there eats every kind of flour and does VHP-VHP,but for India his attitude is different. He supports the sanghi politicians who took bribes from for asking questions in the parliament,it is like selling ice cream to the Eskomos. These persons think that the rest of the world is made out of duffers.
Abe,Chaiwllha, is not like selling ice creams to Eskimos,it is like selling pea nuts to monkies, to create monkey business, by the CXongress goons.
Sonia is great, she is at least doing something to help the poor. But a few sanghis are as usual sour. The sangh way of thinking is to govern and fill own pockets trough legal and illegal means i.e.petrol pump and other bribes they took for asking questions in the parliament.
History is repeating itself. Extra-constitutional powers are laying down policies for the government to follow.
And Manmohan jumped on his feet and said "Where do I sign, Madam?"!
I believe Sonia is ALSO criticized for being a woman. I can feel that macho echo from the readers. It is NOT our fault because that's the way we are taught and brought up...denying rights to women.
Savithri, don't play victim of discrimination everytime a woman is involved.Sonia is a foreigner and there are genuine questions of her being able to stand in an Indian shoe (high heeled if you prefer) and make decision for what is best for India. There are lot of people who are aginst the dynastic rule in a country that claims to be democratic. These are all valid concerns.
But if you believe in democracy (I think you do) and she has been elected by the people (you all living in India) then you have to keep your rumblings off! Or, you may take over the Congress and lead the show. We all knew what happened after Rajiv's death and after Narsimha Rao, Congress was ditched by the people. Whether you like it or NOT she is an elected one (Is she an MP?, I don't know). Then through leagl process change the constution like the U.S. only born citizens can become PRESIDENT. If there are no bars in India keep quiet. BTW, I don't know what is Subramaniam Swamy's status; he lives half-the time here and I am sure he may be a green-card holder, yet he can be an Indian Citizen. Is there a bar for green card holders to become an MP. Why don't you critcize Swamy. I think it beacuse he is a man and not a woman...
Its all political gimmick.Poor farmers will never benefit and it will again be rich land-lords who will benefit more.Had 60000 crores been spent on infrastructure development , farmers would have benefitted a lot more than the mercy that has been promised to them and we all know with corrupt governments , corrupt bureaucrats and corrup system , hardly anything , if at all , will reach poor farmers.Only hope for Poor is the GOD almighty and not these corrupt politicians.
Knowing it well that Loan Waiver is going to be flop on the ground, therefore duo of mother and son has started cosmetic surgery well in advance of the Election announcement.Congress knew it well that "Loan Waiver" for marginal farmers is going to be a big flop, therefore duo of mohter and son has started performing Cosmetic Surgery before the elections are announced. All that glitters is not gold. UPA is silent on the farmers who committed suicides due to bad debts on their heads and Congress knows well "Dead bodies don't tell tales".
At times I feel very much perplexed before I criticize Sonia and Rahul for they are given so much importance and place in Indian politics which they don't deserve at-all.Certainly their image is being illegitimately magnified by malevolent Congies. How boldly Sonia speaks as if she were despot of the nation? How shamelessly she speaks of her son as AICC gen. sec!It pains deep in the heart of every true son of the Nation. To blame for that pain is not sonia or Rahul, are media and not cause, but people who have systematically, persistently and deliberately fostered and motivated them to take India in clutches. These people disguise themselves under the lofty name of Patriotism and nationality while they are real enemies of the nation. These are the people who for their personal ambitions are sacrificing the most vital interests of our country. These Congies in the times of national adversity and need deliberately launch falsehood after falsehood. They must go and the problem will be solved.
It is a pity that myopic considerations are overweighing the real facts wherein congress President Sonia Gandhi has rightly raised the issue of extending Rs 6,000 crore loan waiver shceme to the marginalised farmers also praising Vilas Rao Govt in Maharashtra for following the party's principles of growth and development.
It is a shame that your Media propagates such fiendish and adulterated propaganda, of yhis Big Mama.It is such a disgrace that you allow your Media to become a vessel for such populistmischievousness, malignancy and humdrums. Her unrealistic, imprudent and unpragmatic polulist policies are about to screw the poor Indians, to the grind stone and make them wlllow in the filth.THe Public finances are in a mees. The Govt prediction of 3.1% of Budget deficit, is popycock. They omit the state deficits, fuel, fertiliser and free loans subsidies, which itself amounts to 3.5%of the GDP.India's Fiscal defict is worst toady then ever.Such complacent boasting of giveaway, tantamount to criminality.Someone will have to oay for these Freebees,in the end it will be the poor who will pay through their nose. The retard is on a crusade to destroy India economic growth and prosperity,by such precedence. She must do well to note that her failure to REFORM, is holding back the POOR INDIANS.
Who is running India. Congress president or Prime Minister.Sonia Gandhi is president of congress party not India, she should have the intelligence not to interfere in India day to day policy making decisions,if she has to say something she should bring it up in the congress party meetings.Does she realizes that she is undermining the goverance of the country, hence contributing to country law and order situation..Everybody is CHIEF in India. No wonder you only need only two to three trouble makers out of one billion people, who can hold the entire country hostage. Is this a democracy run by decent law abinding politicians or run by a few Dem-O-Crazy politicians throwing wrench in all sensible resolutions. These do gooders lack poverty of ideas and adding poverty to India.
Madam Sonia can just take the credit by saying that she had ordered the PM and FM to adopt the method her son had said...why does she want to fool public by again giving some general talk. While they celebrated this in Delhi..didnt they realise the waiver well. Surprising to hear that she is supporting Vilasrao Deshmuk..despite he getting poor rating from his own party colleagues in Mumbai. Now, we know how Madam looks at State Govt. and their leaders..well poll result will tell. Shame on Congress that they need to sell budget like this..never before in the history of India. God Save India!!
