New Delhi, February 21: In a bid to clear the heavy backlog of cases and render speedy justice, Government on Thursday proposed to increase the strength of Supreme Court judges from 25 to 30.

A meeting of the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, approved a proposal to increase the number of judges in the apex court, excluding the Chief Justice, to 30.

"The increase in the number of judges will allow Supreme Court to function more efficiently and effectively towards attaining the ultimate goal of rendering speedy justice to litigants," an official spokesperson said.

A bill to amend the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956, would be introduced in Parliament soon, she said.

In 1986, the number of judges in the Supreme Court was increased from 18 to 25 plus the Chief Justice.

Reports said there were about 47,000 cases pending before the court till January this year.

The Government had earlier informed Parliament that the pendency of cases in the apex court had increased by about 25 per cent since 2006.

incrase of SC judges by shanthakumar on 22 Feb 2008

For getting a good judgement we need about 100 SC judges to clear the backlog of 47000 cases pending. Further a strict rule that any case can be postponed there should be a time limit say three times only ! Assuning of 100 judges, the existing backlog can be completed in about 90 in a year . With the postponement of such cases upto three times, hopefully within a year judgemnets are possible ! So,if are really serious of the issue, i suggest there should be about 100 SC judges.

Inact Sharia by HS on 21 Feb 2008

There are so many cases which are pending in all the courts of India. It takes about almost 15-20 years for any civilian case to get cleared and judgement released. So many dates hv been given prior the final hearing or judgement is passed. This is not becos there are shortage of judges but deliberate delay in disposition of judgement on the part of judiciary for their vested interest. We do not need more judges but a strong body to oversee the processes and performance of these judges. There has to be proper appraisal of these existing judges and not increase in the number of judges. The other day I was watching a programme on the sharia law in one african country where the sharia court was able to clear the cases in the shortest possible time. We do not need more judges but law like Sharia in India.

Good idea of brainless people: by Dr. Ganesh on 21 Feb 2008

At least no women will file any case of harassment or rape. If files, petitioner herself will be awarded beheading in public or 500 lashes. Thus, less number of pending cases. Countries using Sharia laws should be tried in the international court of justice for human rights violations. How about Draconian laws??

Is any Constitutional Boundry not to go beyond 30 by Ajai Singh From Boston on 21 Feb 2008

why only 30 ? why not this number should go 50, if Parliament could have round 700 MP, out of which 50 percent never attend the proceeding and never bother to ask the question, why not India does have 50 Judges in SC, they always delivered good judgments.
