New Delhi, March 11: Mahatma Gandhi and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi are among 99 personalities for whom recommendations were received by the government last year for conferring the highest civilian award of Bharat Ratna.

Recommendations were also received for political stalwarts like A B Vajpayee, V P Singh, Lalu Prasad Yadav, Mulayam Singh Yadav and M Karunanidhi besides departed leaders like Babu Jagjivan Ram, Bansi Lal, Charan Singh, P V Narasimha Rao, Kanshi Ram, N T Rama Rao and S Nijalingappa.

This was disclosed by Minister of State for Home Affairs Manikrao H Gavit in Lok Sabha during Question Hour.

While the government received 70 recommendations in 2005, it got five less the next year, he said, adding the government has conferred the highest award to 40 personalities so far.

The Congress chief's name was recommended for Bharat Ratna for consecutive three years from 2005. Names of Dalit icon Jagjivan Ram, father of White Revolution Verghese Kurien, agriculturist M S Swaminathan and yoga guru Baba Ramdev were also recommended for these three consecutive years.

The Father of Nation was recommended for the award in 2006 and 2007. Biju Patnaik, M F Husain, Jagjivan Ram, Karunanidhi, Justice (Retd) V R Krishna Iyer, Veer Savarkar and Kurien got multiple recommendations.

The only couple to be recommended for the coveted award last year were social reformer Jyotiba Phule and his wife Savitribai.

The other names included legendary revolutionary Bhagat Singh, musicians Bhimsen Joshi, Bhupen Hazarika, Mohd Rafi and Balamurali Krishna, actors Dilip Kumar and Raj Kumar, veteran journalist Khushwant Singh, Indian- American astronaut Sunita Williams and industrialist Ratan Tata.

Semmangudi's Centenary Year by Jay on 12 Mar 2008

Honestly, I wanted to see the name of the legendary (late) Sri Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer in the list. But after seeing the nominations, I feel very happy that the Indian classical music lovers will be happy NOT to see his name in the list.

Barath Rathna Award by Balu on 12 Mar 2008

Its a shame to sugeest Krunanidhi and MF Hussain both of them promoted nude pictures of Hindu Gods. Karunanidhi did this as early as in 1970/71 thus became a hero. But Sonia might consider him next time as he has successfully hurt the sentiments of Hindus and still doing so!

Bharat Ratna for Italian Mafia Antonia Maino by Lajja on 11 Mar 2008

"The Congress chief's name was recommended for Bharat Ratna for consecutive three years from 2005." So, why waiting? There can be no other better candidates than this. Anyhow, this award was created for Nehru Kutta (D*og) clan and his champchas. This nation gone to the dogs, nothing can save this nation from self-destruction.

GOD SAVE INDIA by REDDY on 12 Mar 2008

I could not agree with you more my friend. God save India?

Bharat Ratna by M T Raju on 11 Mar 2008

I was disappointed to find Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi missing from the various lists of persons recommended for Bharat Ratna. I don't know why Mahtma Gandhi was included in the list as he is the least deserving candidate for this honour. How can he be bracketed with such greats as Sonia Gandhi, Karunanidhi and M F Hussein?
