Govt refusing foreign media visit to Arunachal to cover Dalai Lama trip

New Delhi The Central Government has reportedly refused permission to foreign media to travel to Arunachal Pradesh to cover the proposed visit of the Dalai Lama.

The Union Government on Thursday revoked its earlier permission given to four foreign correspondents, besides cancelling fresh permits.

Earlier, fourteen Delhi-based foreign journalists and five others had sought permission to travel to Arunachal Pradesh to cover the visit. The Ministry of External Affairs said that these applications were being processed.

As per the rules, foreigners have to approach the MEA for Restricted Area Permit to travel to the state.

The Dalai Lama will be undertaking a week-long visit to Arunachal Pradesh, a visit over which China has raised strong objections.

During his visit, he is expected to visit the Tawang Monastery. He is also expected to inaugurate a super-specialty hospital.

On October 19, the Arunchal Government's state reception committee had cleared the Dalai Lama's visit to the state.

Controversy arose over his visit, when China raised strong objections to it on grounds of Arunachal Pradesh being a disputed territory and the Dalai Lama being seen as a dissident and renegade leader.

New Delhi retaliated by saying that Arunachal Pradesh was an integrated part of India and that it saw the Dalai Lama as an honoured guest of the Indian Government. This view was conveyed by the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, when he met his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in Hua Hin, Thailand, last week.

Its most regreting that india goverment is neglecting the interest of north eastern states of india at the cost of the integrity and unity of the country. In 1962 india was defeted by china whom than govt. of india was treating as Big brother our late priminister Pt Nehru was so shocked and felt defeted that he had to declear in a radio broad cast that ASSAM IS IN DANGER WHICH resulted in exqueds of a large number of citizens to other states of India.China ius again playing a dirty game. And this time we the indians can teach it a good lesson by simply stop buying chiness products. Also we the patriot citizens of this great country should voluntarily not buy any made in china product. In my openion this will be a enough reply for CHINA .

This is the biggest mistake GOI is doing by L.C.Bilandani on 07 Nov 2009

Not allowing foriegn media to cover Dalai Lama trip is the biggest mistake of our govt.It only goes on to show that the govt has not changed its mindset from the British rule yet.Britishers only put restrictions on Indians to visit other parts of country and our govt. has followed the same tradition as with civil servants. They dont have thier own mindset and will traverse the same path as Britishers. It is not only in Arunachal Pradesh the Indian nationals are restricted. A person who is non resident of Kashmir cannot buy property in Kashmir.Any logic? No. Similarly we Indians cannot visit Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh although these are our own states.Going to border may be a sensitive matter but what prevents govt in allowing visit to non border areas.Another funny thing,we cannot buy agriculture land though being Indian national, but have to prove his/her credentials to prove that he belonged to an agriculturist family. Is this not absurd.May God bless politicians who never think.

Shame! by BP on 07 Nov 2009

What a shame! Is Arunachal part of India or not? If so, why are our cowardly leaders preventing media from covering Dalai Lama's visit to Arunachal pradesh? By doing so, aren't we sending the wrong signal to the chinese commies that would encourage them to get even bolder with their aggressive designs? Why are we being week-kneed and pandering to chinese ego?

India under the Congress is weak and has undermined Indian sovereignty by S.Balakrishnan on 07 Nov 2009

IF the Indian Government believes itself that it will keep Arunachal Pradesh as an Indian territory as the people of Arunachal Pradesh wants it to do then there is no reason for them to deny permits to anyone from visiting the state. I fear that the Indian Government will ultimately give away Arunachal Pradesh like it did our rights in Tibet on empty promise of respecting the autonomy of Tibetans. The Congress Government is weak when it comes to dealing with China or other outside countries but strong in suppressing opposition inside India and prevent Indians from visiting parts of India. I am afraid of India under these people who have managed to keep India as an underdog all these years when China leapfrogged over us despite all the advantage we had as a democracy. Now China is the supplier of every essential things in the west and is indispensable. China can easily take over Arunachal Pradesh and demand that the US acknoledge it as it will withdraw its dollar reserves.

Same as Kargil Blunder by Rohit on 06 Nov 2009

If the Kargil war was telecasted by the foreign media, it would have been much shorter and the struggle to imlicate Pakistan as a terrorist state would have been easier. All the political leaders of the world know the situation in Arunachal Pradesh, India should let foreign media have a little presense in such matters.....globaly india can assert its opinion.

The farce of “restricted area permit” need to be stopped immediately. by Jay on 06 Nov 2009

If India claims Arunachal as an integral part of India, then it should treat Arunachal just like any other state. India must shed its cold-war mentality and must not alienate resident Indian citizens in Arunachal and other parts of the country from each other and strengthen doubt about Indian%u2019s legitimate right over those places among foreigners. The farce of %u201Crestricted area permit%u201D need to be stopped immediately. I was thrown out of a bus and barred from entering Arunachal despite of showing my Indian passport to the police. LEAVE ALONE CHINA OR PAKISTAN, I MYSELF HAVE A PROBLEM TO ACCEPT THE FACT THAT SOME PARTS OF THE COUNTRY BELONG TO MY OWN COUNTRY AND I CANNOT FREELY TRAVEL WITHIN MY OWN COUNTRY. Foreign media visit to cover Dalai Lama is a great opportunity for positive international media coverage for India.

Rohit Upmanyu born in veer bhumi by Rohit Upmanyu on 06 Nov 2009

I think we should not take the comments of Mr. Raj Thackrey because it might be the reason behind his comment that they called their army by title Dog and doesn't respect and trust anybody. so it's our duty to excuse this innocent person. Jai Hind

Another strategic blunder by bowing to Coercive Chinese diplomacy by Pema on 06 Nov 2009

By banning foreign media India is only casting doubts on its own legitimacy on Arunachal in general and Tawang in particular. Its has worked in favour of Chinese coercive diplomacy. It neutralizes all the strategic bold moves by South Block. We don't need to convince the Indians but world of our legitimacy over Tawang. Another diplomatic and strategic blunder by GOI.

This is a correct step by arun kumar on 06 Nov 2009

No foreign country other than India has born the burnt sheltering Tibetans in India. MEA invites foreign journalist to show case India's progress and what they reproduce is a snake charmer sitting in front of Hawa Mahal in Jaipur. Their reporting so biased that they try to project India as a country of snake charmers while their impotent Governments could do nothing to the Tibetan cause except shedding some crocodile tears. Correct and right decision of Government of India.

Sudha by Satyabati on 06 Nov 2009

Raj Thackeray is not a lunatic because there has been a long surreptitious rapport between the Indian Central Govt including the army and Chinese Govt which has provided the scope to the so-called marxists in Bengal to shift the focus to the repressed and deprived people called 'maoists' while the army and corrupt officials of the central govt are covering up their nefarious stories of nuclear, chemical and biological weapon proliferation. These days the truth speakers are often called 'mad'. This is not new because Kopernicus, Galileo and Socrates had also to face the music with their discovery of the truth.

A big lie by Raj Thackrey on 06 Nov 2009

This is a big lie from the government of india. It is not the security of Dalai lama, but the government wanted to prevent the media from watchiing how dalai lama and indian officials get visas to enter arunachal pradesh. The indian army is like a dog, only shown its might to innocent civilians fighting freedom struggle they call maoist instead their tail is down when it comes to china. Given this facts india should immediately make its states independent.

It was Chinese that Ran like Cowards! by ABC on 07 Nov 2009

They attacked when the world was captivated by Cuban Missile Crisis and ran like dogs! Brave Indian soldiers stayed at their posts although unequipped and outnumbered. They froze to death with fingers on triggers but did not leave the posts. That was so 1962. It is the same bravehearts but better trained and equipped. Don't dare crossing them!

Another Big Lie by R J Bhatia on 06 Nov 2009

One of our friends wrote that Indian army is one of the finest and professional army in the world. But unfortunately truth is far more bitter than this sweet myth.700,000 indian soldiers are in J&K to control the handful of separatists or freedom fighters, whatever you may like to call it, for the last eleven years.

Raj Thackrey: Faking religion is also a lir by Dev on 06 Nov 2009

'Raj Thackrey', We know you are a Pak. So why do you decorate yourself with a Hindu name? Are you so ashamed of yourself or longing to be a Hindu? Faking your religion is a lie. Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of India. I have my home there.I do not want any Chinese rule in Arunachal. Dalai Lama is welcome and will be received with full honours by us. Indian media-persons have massive difficulties in getting foreign visas. This will be great opportunity for the Indian media to report and the foreign media persons will just have to depend on the Indian news agencies....This is acceptable for a change.

Raj Thackrey by Patriotic Indian on 06 Nov 2009

We know that u are a Paki. Have u got a fancy to use Hindu Names or longing to be a Hindu. As regards to the Indian Army, we do not need to get certificates from Pakis.
