‘Govt taking preventive steps to control meningitis’

New Delhi, March 7 Health Minister Dr Yoganand Shastri, after a meeting on water and vector borne diseases on Friday, said he had instructed health officials of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, New Delhi Municipal Corporation and Delhi Cantonment Board to remain vigilant about meningitis and other respiratory ailments in the coming months.

Shastri said that till March, 74 cases of meningitis were reported in Delhi. The disease claimed 13 lives during the year, of which six cases were from the capital and the rest from the neighboring states. He said all hospitals have been supplied vaccines and advertisements have been inserted in newspapers to make people aware of the disease. The Health Minister said the government was taking all preventive steps to keep a check on the spread of meningitis. All major government hospitals have been asked to be on the alert and and report all cases. The minister also said that zonal health officers have been instructed to implement preventive measures in their areas.
