New Delhi, March 10: Government is planning to bring in a special marriage act for the Sikhs, a long standing demand of the community.

This was stated by Law and Justice Minister H R Bhardwaj in the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

He said the Government has taken note of demands in this regard from various Sikh organisations and "there should not be a problem" in introducing such an act.

"We will bring it soon," he said replying to supplementaries. To a separate question, he said the Government has no plans to make registration of Hindu marriages compulsory under the law.

He said the Supreme Court had directed that marriage of all persons should be registered compulsorily in their respective states and the "matter is being carefully examined in its full ramifications."

Bhardwaj added that the Centre is studying the matter and would not like to rush things as it was an important issue.
