Kolkata, January 1 Alarmed at the inundation of the Tata Motors small car manufacturing project site at Singur this monsoon, the state government decided to expedite the Ghiya-Kunti irrigation project at Singur.

A meeting was held at Writers’ Building on Tuesday and was presided over by Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

Commerce and Industry Minister Nirupam Sen, principal secretary of that department Sabyascahi Sen, WBIDC managing director M V Rao and Hooghly MP Rupchand Pal also attended the meeting.

After the hour-long meeting, Nirupam Sen told reporters the area where the plant was coming up had a drainage problem.

He said the state government had decided to implement a master plan with the help of the irrigation department, which will cost about Rs 170 crore.

“The irrigation project is 35 years old and we have discussed how to expedite it,” the minister added.

Secretary Sabyasachi Sen said that he hoped that there would be no waterlogging at the manufacturing site in the coming monsoon. “Work will start soon and will be completed before next monsoon,” Sen said.

He, however, did not say who will fund the project.

Tata Motors’ Rs 1-lakh car is expected to roll out from Singur plant by June, company chairman Ratan Tata earlier said.

Meanwhile Pal, a CPM MP, said that work of the project was progressing well. “People are now offering all co-operation and the project will be over in due time.”
