Kolkata, July 15 Nearly 42 lakh poultry and ducks were culled in the state after the out-break of bird flu in January this year. This was announced on Tuesday by Minister for Animal Resources Development Anisur Rahman in the state Assembly.

“While 5 lakh families bore the financial loss due to the disease, the total loss stood at Rs 350 crore,” the minister said. To contain the disease, the state government spent Rs 47 crore, while the Centre gave Rs 24 crore.

“We are further spending Rs 37 crore,” the minister added.

The Assembly also passed the West Bengal Panchayat Bill. It aims make the post of Pradhans a full-time functionary of the gram panchayat and puts a bar on them and their deputies for seeking a reelection to the panchayat bodies for at least one year, if they are removed from their post.

The Congress, however, opposed the Bill saying that the provisions of the Bill were against democracy and the spirit of the Constitution.

“The Bill is unjustified and we have registered our protest,” said Manas Bhuniya, Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader.

He also criticised the state government for implementing the rural family insurance scheme of the Central government only in four districts — Malda, Burdwan, North 24-Parganas and North Dinajpur.

“The Centre has sanctioned money for implementing the scheme but the government is launching it only in selected areas. It proves the failure of the government to take the scheme to the village level,” said the Congress leader.
