New Delhi, July 18: Exuding confidence that the UPA government will win the vote of confidence comfortably, Finance Minister P Chidambaram rejected allegations of horse-trading and corporate money power playing a role in the trial of strength.

He also made it clear that the government would not abdicate its responsibility in managing the economy saying it would be in office till the next elections.

"It is all entirely speculative. It is a creation of the media. I don't think corporates have any role in either saving or defeating the government. I think it is an exaggerated notion of corporate power," he said in an interview.

He was replying to queries on media reports about the influence of the corporates and their money power in the ensuing vote of confidence in the Lok Sabha on July 22.

On the chances of government's survival, he said, "My colleagues in the party, especially party officials, are extremely confident that we will win the confidence vote comfortably."

He also deplored CPI leader A B Bardhan's allegation that UPA was buying MPs for Rs 25 crore each for survival and was using the corporates in this terming it as ‘outrageous’.

"We have lost the art of moderation in politics. Every accusation and every statement is either exaggerated or extreme. The allegation of Rs 25 crore to win over an MP is outrageous.

"There is no basis for this allegation. We must return to the politics of moderation and use only moderate language and rhetoric in commenting on political development," the Finance Minister said.

Only one question to Chidambaram - Amar Singh had said that Congress treated him worse than a dog. How come suddenly the same Amar Singh and Mulayam Singh fell in love with Congress after four years of bitter animosity ? Please do not insult the intelligence of aam admi.

Corporate money and Govt. by an indian on 19 Jul 2008

Chdambaram is not speaking truth when he says that corporate money doesn't play any role in saving or toppling any government.Horse trading with such high offers as 25 crores to an M.P.to vote for or against government, the dirty role of corporate houses can not be denied. In 1993 it was 3 crores, now it is 25 crore.Since America wants Manmohan-Bush deal to go through some MPs may be demanding US$.This is how democracy works.

NUKE DEAL by KN VENUGOPAL on 19 Jul 2008

It is curious that the left charges congress of cosying upto USA. But congress is fighting shy of calling CPM of cosying to china. All along no party has called them to account for their silence on the India-china war of 1962, where one statement they made was that India agressed into China*s territory. Then again when China is being reported on incursions into Indian territory, all the parties react. But even BJP does not call for making incursions into China*s territory. Then again when China declares Kashmir is a disputed area, India does not declare Tibet is a disputed area.May be I dont understand diplomatic languageRegards,KN VENUGOPALGANDHIGIRI

We cannot antagonise China by Musafir on 19 Jul 2008

Grow up Mr Chidambaram by Jatin on 19 Jul 2008

Whom is he fooling around? Mr Chidambaram should know that people have better access of information these days than the days of PV Narashima Rao who bribed about Rs 4 corers each to buy some idiots of Sibu Soren’s JMM party.

Invisible hands behind power plays by Jay on 19 Jul 2008

Corporate and business houses always have role in politics. In western world they get punished for some of their wrong doings while in India they are the roam scot-free. They buy both policies and politicians. They enjoy most of the benefits of our medieval law and order and judiciary. Common citizens will always be the victim. Where do you think the money to trade idiots (horses) is coming from? But at the end of the day it’s you and me who will pay the ultimate price (in form of higher prices of goods and worse law and order).
