Chandigarh, February 4 Chandigarh Municipal Corporation had to halt the digging of a road in Manimajra after the workers stumbled upon the remains of graves during the process. As the news spread, around 250 Muslims gathered on the spot and demanded that the work be stopped.

After Muslims protested against the digging in the wake of graves found, Mayor Pardeep Chhabra along with other MC officials reached at the spot and ordered that the work be stopped.

The protesting claimed that area where the MC was carrying on the digging to lay road was part of a graveyard, which was later encroached by someone to install a sawmill. Due to encroachment, over the period of time the size of graveyard reduced. Recently, the Municipal Corporation removed the encroachments and planned a road and parking in the area.

But after the graves were unearthed, the Mayor has asked those protesting to visit his office on Tuesday to stake claim for the land. He also assured to take up the issue with the Municipal Commissioner. Mayor said the land was given to the Muslims to be used as graveyard by then Maharaja of Manimajra. He said over the period of time encroachment reduced the size of graveyard.

“After coming to know about the graves, I visited the spot and issued instructions to stop the work. We will consider the claim of Muslims and the issue will be discussed with Municipal Commissioner,” he added.
