New Delhi, January 27 Several infrastructure projects launched keeping the 2010 Commonwealth Games in mind—new flyovers, underpasses, Metro lines and the High Speed Bus Corridor—have led to felling of trees. Here is what the Delhi government is doing to maintain the slippery balance between the city’s precious green cover and concrete dreams

* Compensatory afforestation has been possible only in the existing 14 city forests and 9 new city forests, created for this purpose.
* 10 per cent of compensatory afforestation should be carried out near infrastructure project sites.
* The Delhi Parks and Greens Society, an initiative of the government, plans to create green sinks in nearly 15,000 gardens and parks in the Capital.
* The society, with an initial corpus fund of Rs 3 crore, will undertake tree plantation and increase green cover in Delhi from 19 to 33 per cent, raising it from 326 sq km to 500 sq km.
* 18.30 lakh saplings were to be planted for the 2007-08 greening target.
* The government plans to plant 1.60 lakh saplings in the existing 14 city forests in 2007-08.
* Compensatory plantation is being done @ 10 trees for 1 tree felled and @ 5 trees for 1 tree to be translocated.
* 85,000 saplings were planted as compensatory plantation this year.
* Of the 175 waterbodies identified, plantation has been completed around 36.
* 4,821 saplings have been planted for rejuvenating water bodies so far.
