Kolkata, February 21 After 10 long years of experience in Indian club football, Sanmugam Venkatesh, who has donned the shirts of Kolkata giants East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, feels that it’s high time the top club administrations get started with progressive policies.

Venkatesh, who who had a consistent showing with the green-and-maroon brigade this season, is also expecting an impressive offer for the upcoming coming season. And if Mohun Bagan Club officials can retain the midfielder with a commendable deal, Venkatesh will glady continue with the same team for another season.

Speaking to The Indian Express yesterday, the experienced player said: “Age should not be a factor. The quality of offer depends only on the player’s current performance. And considering that point, I am satisfied with the quality of the performance that I produced in the Kolkata Premier League (KPL), Federation Cup and the I-League so far.”

Discussing the Mohun Bagan team’s failure in clinching the I-League title this season despite getting relatively close, Venkatesh blamed it on the hectic scheduling. “KPL is a gruelling tournament. And after you are exhausted in the KPL, you can’t get enough time off before participating in the Federation Cup and then in the back-breaking I-League. Naturally, the players do not get time to recover from tiredness and injuries. Clubs from outside Kolkata do not have to play to such a tough schedule. If you notice, most outstation players generally don’t carry too many injuries,” Venkatesh explained.

If he decides to stay back, Ventakesh has made up his mind to limit the number of KPL matches he plays in the season to 10 appearances. He, however, isn’t too confident if the Mohun Bagan club administration will agree to such a deal with him. “The clubs should look forward to win championships like Federation Cup and I-League, instead of focusing too much on the local league. These clubs should change their policy and not field big name players like Bhaichung Bhutia, Jose Barreto, James Singh, Dharamjit Singh, and so on, for too many of the local league matches. If the current policy is not changed, these teams will find it difficult to win the I-League title by competing with really tough outstation opponents,” Venkatesh said.
