Gujarat riots ghost comes back to haunt Modi

Ahmedabad The Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) has summoned Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on March 21 in connection with a petition filed by Zakia Jafri, widow of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri who was killed in the 2002 post-Godhra riots.

Ehsan Jafri was burnt alive with 37 others at the Gulbarg Society on February 28, 2002, a day after the attack on the Sabarmati Express in Godhra.

“We have summoned the Chief Minister and we will be asking a few questions based on the evidence collected till now. Nothing more than this,” SIT chief Raghavan said. He said the summons to Modi were only in connection with the Jafri murder case.

The SIT is to submit its report to the Supreme Court by April 30.

On the summons to Modi, Zakia said: “I hope justice will be given to us. It has been a long journey. I am very happy that Modi has been summoned.”

In New Delhi, the Congress said it would be appropriate if Modi quits. “The summoning should have happened long ago as the CM of Gujarat and his government presided over the worst pogrom against minorities in independent India,” said party spokesman Manish Tewari.

On the other hand, BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said: “The summons to Modi by SIT are a part of the legal process which shall be dealt with as per the process of law.”

In her petition to the Supreme Court, Zakia had named Modi and 62 others, including seven who were ministers in 2002, and several officials. She alleged that Modi conspired with and instructed the then DGP and other senior officials to “let Hindus vent their anger” after the Godhra incident.

In April 2009, the Supreme Court, on her complaint, directed the SIT to probe the alleged role in the riots of the 63 people she had named.

Last July, the Gujarat High Court dismissed a petition challenging the SIT probe. Former BJP MLA Kalu Malivad, one of the 63 named in the complaint, filed a petition in the Gujarat High Court, demanding a stay on investigations into the complaint by Zakia. The High Court said since the SIT was directly working under the supervision of the Supreme Court, no relief could be granted in the matter.

In September, the Nanavati-Mehta Commission, probing the Sabarmati Express attack and the riots, turned down an application demanding that Modi be summoned. The applicant, Jan Sangharsh Manch chief Mukul Sinha, challenged the decision in the Gujarat High Court. A hearing is scheduled for March 15.

Sinha today welcomed the SIT move to summon Modi, “It is the first good step that the SIT has taken. But the main question is what exactly are they going to ask Modi,” he said.

Modi by Indian on 12 Mar 2010

Modi came into prominence after he rebuilt the devasted Bhuj area after the earth quake.A predominantly muslim area took no dimension of religion in a no nonsense speed. There was no corruption and greediness.Compare it with the Bhopal case when Congress ruled the State. It was corruption synonimus and to date the sufferers have not got compensation and money has been got from abroad and digested by Congress politicians. The main victims were Muslims. So much for the guardians of Secularism

Modi by Indian on 12 Mar 2010

People demand that Modi should be tried in international court. Why? Do they not have faith in Indian judiciary? The mob was sponsored by the then ruling party, the Congress. The sikhs were cut into pieces n burnt alive while their women were chased n raped. And all this happened in a matter of 72 hours.Dead bodies were piled on to a truck; the pictures are extremely gruesome & one shudders at the level of inhumanity. The then PM Rajiv Gandhi was glorified and was never taken to task for masterminding the 84 genocide.

Modi by Indian on 12 Mar 2010

What happened in Gujarat was sad and unfortunate incident, but 1984 Delhi riots was major one when compared to this. If the media had spent 10% of its time and energy on 1984 riots I would have said the media tried to be neutral. In 2002, 971 out of nearly 60 lacs muslims lost their lives against nearly 3000 of 12 lacs sikhs in Delhi 1984. Police was silent spectator in Delhi riots whereas Gujarat police fired thousands of bullets to control riots claiming almost equal lives from both the communities.Army was called out on the first day of riots. Rajiv Gandhi justified Delhi riots by saying that the earth shakes when big tree falls. Yet no one raised finger at Rajiv Gandhi and so-called seculars are attacking Modi every day.

Terrorism comes after unjustice - Surpem Court judge by aman on 12 Mar 2010

Those who say after 2002 there is PEACE then I ask them if Modi and his gang rapes your family & kills innocent people and then they do good work then is it justice? Then every evil will do the same. I know those who support Modi are also have same mentality i.e. Internal Terrorist which more dengrous than external terrorism. And One thing Terrorism comes with Unjustice. If you are honest then u will realize that after such riots terrorism has been increased even people say this reaction but as per ISLAM this HARAM to kill any innocent people but I say If this is reaction then why that action was taken place. Hangup Modi & 92 riots culprits...because they are TERRORIST NO .1. JAI HIND

modi must be tried in a court of law in INDIA AND PUNISHED FOR HIS MURDEROUS ACTS IN GUJRATT*/

I am ashamed at the turn of events..... by JNS on 12 Mar 2010

If Shri. Modi is summoned by the SIT for the 2002 Riots case, then why not: 1. Congress cabinet of 1984, including the caretaker PM which sat over and watched A MINORITY COMMUNITY OF INDIA SIKHS BEING systematically butchered on orders of the Congress high command. 2. Arent Sikhs minority too? Congress says that 1984 Delhi is a DEAD HORSE, AND PEOPLE ARE FLOGGING A DEAD HORSE, this itself speaks for the party's standards. Teesta Setalvaad and her types have been called Liars by none other then the SC. I want to know if we can file a case against Teesta, Congress and other idiots who have wasted public money by their wild lies. Narendrabhai is true son of soil, an Indian, a man who has drastically changed the lives of our Gujarati Brethren. This is a shame, and insult to an elected leader of the people.

congress bad game? by Ashok Patel on 12 Mar 2010

Even congress do something like suu kii, to Narendra Modi, Another thousand ' MODI' will came out from Hugh India. Narendra Modi is a voice of common man, and have work lot for gujarat. SIT on the direction of UPA chair, did a big mistake. After 2002 there is a peace in state, no communal riot, but congress want to disturb state, and want to please the minority for their vote in Bihar, and UP. Gujarat's people knows ' MODI' and congress.

why hindu religion does not promote killing unlike muslim religion ??? by sarma on 12 Mar 2010

70% people in india are free eaters (in the name of backwardness, minorities), roiters, murderers and they make vote bank for congress. no wonder they are bend of driving the capable, sincere, taxpayer to extreame corner so that they , one day the good people revolt. revolt to kill congress and its goons. congress has been successfully killing the hindus by various means since the time of nehru.the selfish and corrupt indians still favour congress as to fulfill their selfish desires. its high time for all good and non corrupt, and sincere to come together to root out the stink. let us start with corruption , terorrism, reservation, lethargic workers to non workers in govt jobs.

Extradite him to the ICJ by Ktris on 12 Mar 2010

Since he has the support of extremist Hindus in India and will never face any jail time, he should rightly be extradited to the International Court of Justice and be prosecuted there for genocide.

Just should be the path of everyone by Arum Kumar Chaturvedi on 12 Mar 2010

Sir, we correctly ask Pakistan to hand over the terrorists who murdered many of our countrymen trough different terrorist attacks. We should correctly also take persons like Modi, Togadia, Ashok Singhal, Giri Raj Kishore etc. to task.A criminal or terrorist have no religion, but they always use religion to breed hatred and terror.

Riots particularly based on religious emotions cannot be attributed to the3 chief minister. The center or stae governments do not have resources even to day to tackle a massive riot. There is very little police force, that too outdated system of "constables"who have no power to do anything. We cannot blame Nehru for 1947 riots of partition,Sikh Hindu riots of 1970s to the center etc.It is the response of millions of people and the government cannot do anything and going after Mr.Modi is a political witch hunt.No single leader can be responsible. People are responsible. The cause is mainly lack of education aqnd economics. The more uneducated people we have the more emotional we become. What was the center and the military doing at that time? UPA is trying to score political points. This may back fire!Past should not be digged out.

Justice must prevail by Rakesh on 12 Mar 2010

This is the time India can show the world that there is justice, law and order in India. Modi was elected to protect Gujrat's residents (all Gujratis) regardless of their religion or color or race. He instead annhilated a minority that had no defence, esp women and children. How he could sleep all these nights for 8 years is beyond me. He should face justice like any other Indian citizen and pay for his heinous crimes of genocide against Gujrati citizens.

Another stunt? by Radhe Lal Ahuja on 12 Mar 2010

Is this a public stunt? Or is this a new kind of spin to plaster the mouth of the victims? Will justice be really provided to the victims?Frankly, I have my doubts, because top thieves are never punished in our country where as those who steal to full their stomach are thrown in jail.

Half a life to serve justice. by Jhanki Das on 12 Mar 2010

Sir, law is equal for everyone, but our country is very special, because there seems to be one constitution for the poor and one for the politicians.According to our standards, we live approximately up to the age of 50-60, and our justice system takes more than 30 years to bring to justice the types of Modi,Ashok Singhal, Giri Raj Kishore, Sajjan Kumar etc.The tax payers are in fact the real losers.

So what?? by Jeet on 12 Mar 2010

Why embracement? Law is above all. CM or PM everyone is equal. You all Media should thank Mr Modi, without him who will bring food to your table? Your so called "Breaking News"..... Enjoy your masala for next 5-10 days.... Also Jafari also called Soniajee why shd is not there. This is another drama from Teesta and co. Like Zahira case drama will exposed in few months, till then you guys enjoy. More you write about him stronger he is getting in Gujarat. Well guess what his party secure another 5 seat in next election by this drama. Thanks keep it up.

Looking for ways to trap CM Modi by kk on 11 Mar 2010

Congress hawkers and others are so jealous of Modi success that they have nothing else to disuss except to haunt him for the riots. The congress is finding him guilty but they had the nerves to let loose those who burnt the innocent Hindus worshippers alive with out any provocation. Muslims appear to have bigger say than the Hindus. Congress appear to have turned a blind eyes when lots of innocent sikhs were tortured by the Congress followers. Stop this which hunt and let Modi get on with the good job he has been doing for the country. Congress should be ashamed of just by raising the issue.

Congress again will fail in latest vote bank efforts..sacrificing national interests always.. by Shanmugham on 11 Mar 2010

UPA tactis of using SC/SIT/CBI etc. against political opponents will definately fail. Already the enquiry commission appointed legally (not the one by corrupt Lallu) has cleared Modi govt. In the same lines did any investigating agency summon Rajiv Gandhi or any of his senior cabinet colleagues (not junior thugs like Piolet, Sajjan Kumar) regarding 6000 Sikh massacre by Congress workers in infamous congress organised pogrom? Any way more congress involves in such show (for limited 10% muslim votes I guess..) more it looses the remaining 90% votes some of whom are still voting..And only way containing Modi is making him ineligible to seek people's mandate as otherwise people always prefer him over corrupt, casteist, communal dinastic and stupid (look how Gujrat Congress is making issue of Modi govt. receiving donation from a swami for good purpose 2 yrs ago.. forgetting ND Tiwari was cliose confident of Sonia's family..). But our foreign funded Indian media supports UPA all tricks.

Divided majority is taken for granted by indian on 12 Mar 2010

Loosing 90% votes. They are sure it will not happen, that is why they are using majority like Door Mat. Otherwise a perverted LUNartist would not have been supported to humiliate millions who voted them

A witch hunt for Modi by Jaya on 11 Mar 2010

The witch hunt continues.... The Godhra carnage was initiated by a Muslim mob, instigated by a muslim leadership, that burned a train that killed innocent people. The outrage sparked a spontaneous reaction, that was beyond anyones' ability to quickly bring it under control.

Nail the culprits by The Reader on 11 Mar 2010

The culprits should be bought to book and punished under the court of law irrespective of their political stature!

SIT summons by Ananth Seth on 11 Mar 2010

What is the big deal about it? Waznt Gordon Brown summoned by British Courts? It is high time the media got its "anti Modi" vision corrected.

typical og a congress gunda raj. by sarma on 12 Mar 2010

if anti modi propaganda is not there, the media cant get its salaries paid to the staff, the secular chor in the media cant be appointed directly to RS seat. by the way why an EX MLA helped a terorrist inwhich is in vedeo recording on TOI , fails to make any news in other papers. is protecting terorrism a licence given by congress to the MLAs. ???

Summons by Raina on 11 Mar 2010

It is a good precedence. Nothing is above law. unlike COngress regeimes for example rajiv gandhi who went on record to make inflammatory comment during 1984 riots, nobody investigated his role. was he above law.

Gujarat riots by A.Hussain on 11 Mar 2010

Now central government should be very watchful. Mr. Modi & his goons may engineer a fresh communal riots to avoid appearance before SIT and humiliation of unholy govt of BJP in the state.
