Ehsan Jafri was burnt alive with 37 others at the Gulbarg Society on February 28, 2002, a day after the attack on the Sabarmati Express in Godhra.
“We have summoned the Chief Minister and we will be asking a few questions based on the evidence collected till now. Nothing more than this,” SIT chief Raghavan said. He said the summons to Modi were only in connection with the Jafri murder case.
The SIT is to submit its report to the Supreme Court by April 30.
On the summons to Modi, Zakia said: “I hope justice will be given to us. It has been a long journey. I am very happy that Modi has been summoned.”
In New Delhi, the Congress said it would be appropriate if Modi quits. “The summoning should have happened long ago as the CM of Gujarat and his government presided over the worst pogrom against minorities in independent India,” said party spokesman Manish Tewari.
On the other hand, BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said: “The summons to Modi by SIT are a part of the legal process which shall be dealt with as per the process of law.”
In her petition to the Supreme Court, Zakia had named Modi and 62 others, including seven who were ministers in 2002, and several officials. She alleged that Modi conspired with and instructed the then DGP and other senior officials to “let Hindus vent their anger” after the Godhra incident.
In April 2009, the Supreme Court, on her complaint, directed the SIT to probe the alleged role in the riots of the 63 people she had named.
Last July, the Gujarat High Court dismissed a petition challenging the SIT probe. Former BJP MLA Kalu Malivad, one of the 63 named in the complaint, filed a petition in the Gujarat High Court, demanding a stay on investigations into the complaint by Zakia. The High Court said since the SIT was directly working under the supervision of the Supreme Court, no relief could be granted in the matter.
In September, the Nanavati-Mehta Commission, probing the Sabarmati Express attack and the riots, turned down an application demanding that Modi be summoned. The applicant, Jan Sangharsh Manch chief Mukul Sinha, challenged the decision in the Gujarat High Court. A hearing is scheduled for March 15.
Sinha today welcomed the SIT move to summon Modi, “It is the first good step that the SIT has taken. But the main question is what exactly are they going to ask Modi,” he said.

Nothing has happened to Sajjan Kumar,Tytler, Advani,Thackerays etc etc. So there is nothing to worry. All decent Indians just keep suffering. The judicial system, CBI all these institutions were made to save the skin of such politicians. They will ensure Modi does not suffer and only the decent citizens cry in vain.

Modi came into prominence after he rebuilt the devasted Bhuj area after the earth quake.A predominantly muslim area took no dimension of religion in a no nonsense speed.There was no corruption and greediness.Compare it with the Bhopal case when Congress ruled the State.It was corruption synonimus and to date the sufferers have not got compensation and money has been got from abroad and digested by Congress politicians.The main victims were Muslims.So much for the guardians of Secularism
People demand that Modi should be tried in international court.Why? Do they not have faith in Indian judiciary?The mob was sponsored by the then ruling party, the Congress. What happened in Gujarat was sad and unfortunate incident, but 1984 Delhi riots was major one when compared to this. If the media had spent 10% of its time and energy on 1984 riots I would have said the media tried to be neutral. In 2002, 971 out of nearly 60 lacs muslims lost their lives against nearly 3000 of 12 lacs sikhs in Delhi 1984. Police was silent spectator in Delhi riots whereas Gujarat police fired thousands of bullets to control riots claiming almost equal lives from both the communities.Army was called out on the first day of riots. Rajiv Gandhi justified Delhi riots by saying that the earth shakes when big tree falls. Yet no one raised finger at Rajiv Gandhi and so-called seculars are attacking Modi every day.
Those who say after 2002 there is PEACE then I ask them if Modi and his gang rapes your family & kills innocent people and then they do good work then is it justice? Then every evil will do the same. If Shri. Modi is summoned by the SIT for the 2002 Riots case, then why not: 1. Congress cabinet of 1984, including the caretaker PM which sat over and watched A MINORITY COMMUNITY OF INDIA SIKHS BEING systematically butchered on orders of the Congress high command. 2. Riots particularly based on religious emotions cannot be attributed to the3 chief minister.The center or stae governments do not have resources even to day to tackle a massive riot.There is very little police force,that too outdated system of "constables"who have no power to do anything.We cannot blame Nehru for 1947 riots of partition,Sikh Hindu riots of 1970s to the center etc.It is the response of millions of people and the government cannot do anything and going after Mr.Modi is a political witch hunt.No single leader can be responsible. This is the time India can show the world that there is justice, law and order in India. Modi was elected to protect Gujrat's residents (all Gujratis) regardless of their religion or color or race. He instead annhilated a minority that had no defence, esp women and children. How he could sleep all these nights for 8 years is beyond me. He should face justice like any other Indian citizen and pay for his heinous crimes of genocide against Gujrati citizens.
Is this a public stunt? Or is this a new kind of spin to plaster the mouth of the victims? Will justice be really provided to the victims?Frankly, I have my doubts, because top thieves are never punished in our country where as those who steal to full their stomach are thrown in jail.

Congress hawkers and others are so jealous of Modi success that they have nothing else to disuss except to haunt him for the riots. The congress is finding him guilty but they had the nerves to let loose those who burnt the innocent Hindus worshippers alive with out any provocation. Muslims appear to have bigger say than the Hindus. Congress appear to have turned a blind eyes when lots of innocent sikhs were tortured by the Congress followers. UPA tactis of using SC/SIT/CBI etc. against political opponents will definately fail. Already the enquiry commission appointed legally (not the one by corrupt Lallu) has cleared Modi govt. In the same lines did any investigating agency summon Rajiv Gandhi or any of his senior cabinet colleagues (not junior thugs like Piolet, Sajjan Kumar) regarding 6000 Sikh massacre by Congress workers in infamous congress organised pogrom? It is a good precedence. Nothing is above law. unlike COngress regeimes for example rajiv gandhi who went on record to make inflammatory comment during 1984 riots, nobody investigated his role. was he above law.
