Jaipur, March 9: Over one lakh Gujjars are likely to stage a mass sit-in here tomorrow to demand Scheduled Tribe status for the community in Rajasthan as city police made some preventive arrests ahead of the agitation.

The mass meeting will also demand withdrawal of cases registered against Gujjars during their stir for the ST tag last year, Prahalad Gunjal, an expelled BJP MLA and convenor of the meet, told PTI today.

The ‘Mahapadav’, a day-long affair, will be organised by the Gujjars Arkashan Sangarsh Samiti at the Vidhaydhar Nagar Stadium, he said.

Nearly one lakh Gujjars are likely to participate in the sit-in, Gunjal said adding, "the Mahapadav will be called off only if the state government withdraws criminal cases against our people."

The BJP government registered over 330 cases pertaining to last year's running battles between police and Gujjars in the state in which 26 people were killed.

Some 700 Gujjars were still in jails or were facing criminal cases, said Gunjal, a strong opponent of Col.(Retd) Kirori Singh Bainsala said to be the patron of the community in the state.

To maintain peace and tranquillity, police made some preventive arrests ahead of tomorrow's meeting, District Collector (Jaipur) Akhil Arora said.
