Gurgaon, March 9 The Gurgaon Administration on Sunday said they stopped the marriage of a nine-year-old girl.

Seeta (name changed) is a class three student in the Government school at Nathupur Village and was to tie the knot with her sister Leela (18) on Sunday, district administration officials said.

The bridegrooms reportedly belonged to Naya Baas village in Delhi, officials said.

A spokesman of the administration said Seema, an anganwari supervisor, was informed about the likely marriage a few days back. She approached Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Gupta, who asked her to take the help of Sakshar Mahila Samuh (group of educated women) and village level committee and persuade Mundara Singh, the mother of the minor, against performing the ritual. On being confronted, Mundara reportedly assured the women that Seeta would not be married.

The Deputy Commissioner later asked the police to be vigilant. The Programme Officer of Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) was in touch with the Commissioner, officers said.

On Sunday, the child was also dressed as the second bride, administration officers said.

“The news must have spread because the groom’s family coming from Naya Baas village in Delhi arrived in the village with one bridegroom,” said Gupta.
