Guwahati was on jehadi priority list for long: Police

Assam blast

Guwahati, October 31: As a series of explosions rocked Assam on Thursday, the Assam police pointed the finger of suspicion at jehadi groups, with Special Branch IGP Khagen Sharma saying there were intelligence reports that Guwahati always figured on the ‘priority list’ of these groups.

“Our main suspicion is on the jehadi elements. We do not have any definite and immediate clues about the involvement of HuJI, but you never know,” Sharma said.

He also did not rule out the involvement of local groups. “But the fact remains that the primary aim is to spread terror. That is why they have struck simultaneously and in different towns apart from the state capital,” Sharma said.

Last month, security forces had gunned down seven suspected jehadis in Dhurbi district close to the Indo-Bangla border. The Assam Police had stated that several small groups of jehadis had entered Assam from Bangladesh and Guwahati was one of the most important targets that they had apparently fixed.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who briefed the media later in the evening, did not have anything specific to say except denying that there was any intelligence failure in the state. “We had inputs about such blasts in Guwahati. But we did not anticipate such a serious attack,” Gogoi said.

Gogoi said the government had inputs about terrorists planning to attack Guwahati during Durga Puja and Diwali. “I am not pinpointing any group at the moment. A special task force is being constituted to go deep into the incident,” he said.

Guwahati’s first encounter with foreign terror operatives was almost a decade ago. The Assam Police arrested four Islamic terrorists in the heart of the state capital, two of whom were Pakistani nationals —Md Fasiullah Hussaini of Hyderabad (Sind) and Md Javed Waqar of Karachi—in August 1999. Both of them are top activists of the Pakistan-based Harkat-ul-Mujahideen.

Nine years after they were arrested, all four were released by a sessions court here on June 11 due to lack of “solid evidence”. Billal Miyan, a Bangladeshi national arrested in West Bengal, was also released along with them.

Guwahati explosion by rajmohan k on 31 Oct 2008

Send the Jihadi minister E. Ahmed to Bangladesh again, and let him make the same remarks "we are ready to give hundreds of thousands of visas to Bangladeshis". This foreign minister (Jihadi) has only one agenda while remaining as a deputy minister of foreign affairs.... bring in more and more 'secular' people from Pakistan and bangladesh to India. And they will then take care of the secularism to prosper in India... exactly the way we are witnessing in Guwahati and other parts of the country. Only recently a report appeard in the news papers, that 9658 Pakistanis 'visitors' have gone missing in our country! Who are they, where are they? Are they doing any development work in India for the country? Really, if this congress govt. continues in power, consider very soon, the country will be split into several parts. If people want peace and prosperity and security, BRING BACK BJP.

Guwahati Blasts - Clearly due to Intelligence Failure by Raghuram on 31 Oct 2008

Bomb blasts have become a fact of life for Indians and the governments both at the states and at the centre just pay lip service to the matter. There have been so many serial blasts in the recent past and this clearly indicates failure of intelligence on the part of the government, police and the security agencies. Let the governments at the state and centre accept moral responsibility for the blasts and do something concrete to combat this very serious problem. In this particular case the statement by the Chief Minister that there was no intelligence failure does not change facts. If there were intelligence reports that the jehadi groups were targetting Guwahati why were the blasts not prevented. Clearly the Guwahati blasts indicate an intelligence failure. Let the Assam government not indulge in face saving measures. Let it work to pin point the causes for the intelligence failure and the blasts and prevent their occurence in the future.

Assam Bomb Blast Comments by GSharma on 31 Oct 2008

Govt. should not hide to pronounce that the Jehadi Group ( HUJII etc.) are behind the ghastly act of exploding bombs in Guwahati and other places of Assam. This could be their revenging act against killing seven of their accomplice by security forces about a few months before in Dhubri Border District.Truth should be spoken by the Govt. for the sake of the lives of common public. Hiding something now may aggravate the situation in such a way that it will never be under control anymore. So, now itself, Govt. must impose very strict vigil and arrest the culprits immediately and give them examplary punishment, including capital punishment. Security personnels need to come above our societal divisions and deal these emergency-situations like Bomb-blast etc. with very firm and ruthless hand, which will pave the way for discipline in our society. Any Intelligence input should also be taken very seriously and foolproof action should be taken in advance for the safety of the public.

BE FAST AND ACCOUNTABLE by NAAZIM.M.M on 31 Oct 2008

FAST ACTION IS REQUIRED .TO CATCH THE REAL CULPRITS. EVEN AFTER 24 HOURS IGP KHAGEN SHARMA IS NOT SURE / DEFINITE ABOUT WHO IS INVOLVED IN THE BLASTS .. HIS STATEMENTS LIKE --" IT COULD BE JEHADIS , CLUELESS ABOUT HUJI INVOLVEMENT , IT COULD BE LOCAL GROUPS , PRIMARY AIM IS TO SPREAD TERROR "" ---- RIDICULOUS STATEMENTS AND YET THEY SAY IT WAS NOT AN INTELLIGENCE FAILURE . BOMB BLASTS DO NOT SPREAD LOVE EXPOSE THE REAL CULPRITS , THE NATION IS WAITING FOR YOUR RESULTS .
