A Division Bench of Chief Justice SS Nijjar and Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose expressed concern over the prevailing situation at the hospital where patients were allegedly roaming about in the buff, as they were not given any clothes to wear. The court was hearing to a public interest litigation filed by advocate Ramaprasad Sarkar.
In the PIL, Sarkar has said that the hospital authorities did not provide clothes to the female patients and a section of the nursing staff and class four staff misbehave with patients. He said that a similar situation is also prevalent at the Gobra mental asylum.
Appearing on behalf of the state, Sandip Srimany, told the court that the government has launched an inquiry into the case and would conduct a detailed investigation into the allegations against the nurses and class four staff.
He assured the Bench that the state government would take all the necessary steps to deal with the situation. On Thursday, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had told the Assembly that the Health Minister has been asked to submit a report on the conditions prevailing at the Pavlov Hospital.
The Bench today said that it would constitute a committee of experts to look into the situation at the mental hospital.
