Kolkata, February 1 A Division Bench of Chief Justice S S Nijjar and Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose of Calcutta High Court today directed the state government to take steps to restore a 15-acre wetland at Chawbaga in east Kolkata. Advocate General Bolai Roy said that the area was illegally occupied by an educational trust which had started construction.

A resident of the same area, Subal Chandra Mondal, filed a petition last year alleging that the Elan Education Trust had started constructing the building there by “illegally filling up a wetland” without obtaining permission from East Calcutta Wetland Management Authority.

The HC then directed the state on December 14, 2007 to file a report after conducting an inquiry. Roy placed the report before the bench today. The Division Bench then passed the interim order for restoring the present status of the wetland.
