A division bench of Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice J P Deodhar was shocked to learn that the Government Law College with a strength of 1,602 students has only four full-time lecturers, out of which two were senior lecturers, one of them the acting principal. The court was informed that there were other visiting faculties who taught in the college.
“We are unhappy with this. You have lawyers, judges and politicians coming out of the college and do you think this should be the standard,” Chief Justice Kumar asked the government pleader.
The court has directed the state and University to formulate a scheme regarding the staffing pattern with regard to student teacher ratio and come up with a complete project in a week's time.
The state government has been directed to furnish details regarding the funding for the college. “We will sit together and formulate a scheme regarding the staffing patter,” said University counsel Rui Rodrigues.
The issue was taken up suo-motu based on a letter written by senior advocate of the High Court, R A Dada and signed by like-minded alumni and practicing advocates of the HC. The letter said that “the apathy and deliberate inaction on part of the state government has resulted in our Alma Mater being brought to a state which has led to a break down in the education system”. The court had earlier issued a notice to the assistant to the secretary of the MPSC to remain present before the court and requested the MPSC to fill up the vacant posts.
