New Delhi, May 16 The differences between the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Vice-Chancellor and some members of the university’s Executive Council landed in the Union HRD Ministry on Friday.

Council member Wasim Ahmad met HRD Minister Arjun Singh and submitted a memorandum of demands on behalf of other members of the apex decision-making body of the university. Their demands included an inquiry into the decisions taken by Vice-Chancellor P K Abdul Aziz during the last one year.

There have been serious differences between Aziz, who took over as the V-C in June last year, and some members of the council. The latter have opposed the university’s decision to set up five new centres for common entrance test to professional courses, saying it went against the rules of the institution.

“We have asked the minister to intervene and launch an inquiry into the decisions taken by the Vice-Chancellor in the first year of his tenure, which are against the rules and regulations of AMU,” Ahmad said.

Nine members of the council have, meanwhile, also written to the V-C, asking for a special meeting of the council to be held on May 24 to discuss the situation arising out of the charges reportedly levelled by him against some members of the decision-making body.

In an interview to an Urdu newspaper, according to the members, Aziz has levelled several allegations against them, including that of issuing a threat to his life.
