Kolkata, May 20 The results of the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education were declared on Tuesday. This year saw considerable increase in the pass percentage with 80.38 per cent students clearing the examination, marking an increase of 6.61 per cent as compared to the last year. Going against the recent trend, the girls this time lagged behind the boys. While the girls managed to secure a pass percentage of 79.24 per cent the boys bettered the results with 81.23 per cent.

The percentage of candidates with (A+) grade has increased from 2.93 per cent to 4.49 per cent. The percentage of candidates with (A) grade saw an increase of about 1.11 per cent as compared to the last year.

The officials of the council explained that the improvement was the result of newly introduced reforms, including bifurcation of the syllabus of class XI and XII, implementation of grading system and reducing the number of papers.

Among various districts, Kolkata retained its position of having the highest number of successful candidates with 90.80 per cent students passing the examination. The lowest pass percentage was in North Dinajpur with only 65.57 per cent students qualifying in it.

Also, Howrah recorded high pass percentage with 87.10 per cent and Hooghly with 87.37 per cent. The district level performance is an overall indication of improving academic performance in all the districts, claimed council secretary Debasish Sarkar.

On the issue of distribution of marksheets in about 300 schools where counting for the panchayat polls is yet to commence, the council has entered into an agreement with the administration to distribute the results from the schools today.

“We have discussed the matter with the state election commission and the district administration on the issue. The marksheets will be distributed from today,” said council president Gopa Dutta. The area of the ballot boxes will be cordoned off, she said. But the students will not be allowed to enter the schools tomorrow when the votes will be counted.
