Karnal, March 30: At least 11 bloated corpses, some believed to be at least two months old, were fished out of the Bhakhra canal in the district even as authorities were baffled as to how they landed there.

Eight unidentified bodies were found floating on the mouth of the Narwana-Bhakra-Karnal link canal yesterday and three more this morning, police said.

Two men were identified on the basis of documents found in their clothes. Prabhjot Singh (27) had gone missing from his home in Faridabad since January 9 while Pradeep Kumar of Pehowa in Kurukshetra allegedly committed suicide by jumping in the canal about two months ago, police said.

They said the remaining of nine bodies were beyond recognition and kept in the district mortuary. The authorities have appealed to the public to help identify them.

The finding of the bloated corpses in the Bhakhra feeder canal comes just as Gurgaon city is recovering from the acute water crisis.
