Have done nothing wrong by refusing purdah: Raihana

Kochi A 22-year-old aeronautical engineer, who was given police protection after her relatives threatened her for not using the purdah, says she hasn't done any wrong by refusing to wear the veil.

Asserting that she was a true Muslim, Raihana R Kazi said, "I believe in Islam. I pray daily. I have not committed any mistakes till now."

Raihana said after returning to Kasargod in Kerala from Chennai on completion of her course last month, some of her relatives had insisted that she should wear the customary dress normally worn by Muslim women while moving out in public places.

She said initially it was only her relatives but then she started receiving anonymous letters threatening to murder her. One of the letters had warned that she would be done to death by August 26 after she publicly refused to wear purdah. Raihana approached the Kerala High Court and she was provided with police protection.

"It is very sad such a thing is happening in a literate state like Kerala," she told reporters here.

Raihana said there were rumours that she had married to one Jose and had converted to Christianity.

Raihana said many of her friends had expressed their support. "They are not openly coming out against wearing purdah because of fear," she said.

Coming to Raihana's support, All India Lawyers Union's Kerala Unit had said a person has full freedom to wear any dress acceptable to the society and anyone enforcing a dress code on caste and religious consideration should be isolated.

Writer and social worker C S Chithra said it was unfortunate that a young Muslim girl, who opted to wear a dress of her choice had to seek the high court's intervention for police protection after she had received threat letters which "is a shame and a dangerous trend".

All those who believe in democracy and the Muslim community should come forward to protect Raihana's civic and democratic rights, she said, adding, it was unfortunate that the state government had not taken her complaints seriously.

PURDAH - YOUNG MUSLIM ENGINNER'S PLIGHT IN KERALA by citizen on 03 Sep 2010

Let us offer her all the support to be decent, eduated young lady.Caste, relgion should not take any conclusions on her 'freedoms'. There are many others in the muslim community and others choose not to wear purdah..Kerala is called ''gods country''. This is far from true and the place got all the curse from all the gods and is the most corrupt place in the country - irrespective of the fact over 90 percent are educated. We are in a democratic country called 'INDIA" - free country in many ways, except the narrow minded religious fanatics spreading terrorism. The court system must provide her protection from all the outside elements.. They treat women in Saudi Arabia as 'slaves' with no freedom - but we are a free country of all religious denominations.. It will take another 5 decades for the Saudis and the fanatic ignorant, corrupt PAKIS to learn human decency and courage..As long as this young lady is fighting for her rights-it will help all the others.PRAY for her..Like her - Dont hate.

Interesting purdah by rammohan on 03 Sep 2010

There are so many muslim girls in the entertainment industry wear dress less than modest and they have no compliants to them. I had seen Nazreen an young presenter in Asianet wearing traditional Kerala wear and feasting on Onam day in TV. She dont wear any purdah and she is feasting on a ramadan day. I hindi films the most vulgar dance numbers are presented by muslim girls. The new spokes persom Shabana Azmi in her younger years had shown enough of her body too. if any one want to see the beautiful body of Sania Mirza just check the sports channels. These purdah valas shall go and implement the rules on these celebrities and not on poor middle class families.

Well done Rihana by Apurva Gaglani on 03 Sep 2010

One Rihana can set a precedent for all the Muslim women. It is now time for all Muslim women who feel oppressed with the burkha to abolish the burkha once and for all.

CHOICE OF A PERSON by Indianglobal on 03 Sep 2010

It is a democratical and constitutional right of a person to wear a dress on its own choice which is prevailing in the community. Moreover a threat of her life, cannot be contained by her without notice and report to Law & order authority in the country.

BURGA by jfernandez on 03 Sep 2010

Tell them to migrate to Pakistan or Saudi Arabia!

@J.R.Zaidi by Srinivas on 03 Sep 2010

You guys will never change. Literacy alone will not make you humans. Once you start following the cult, you become one of them. The news is about the sufferings of a girl from your own community. Instead of posting comments on her, you are again playing the "hindu" card. WTF to you on what we do...? Oh... alas, there might be a zionist & hindu conspiracy to "malign" Islam!!!! what else you have to say ah....?????

Kudos by Indian on 03 Sep 2010

It is nice to hear this I strongly support her and her supporters on this issue. It is a shame on the country's rulers who failed to bring in COMMON LAW TO ALL INDIANS IRRESPECTIVE OF CASTE,RELIGION,REGION ETC. AND ABOLISH ALL OTHER BOARDS.I hope all foreward looking people will support this young lady.Let them know that burqa is banned even in syria,to some extant the SC of Bangladesh supported this along with many countries like France,Switzerland etc So let us also ban this and give women the freedom to wear the resonable modest dress in the public. There should not be any coercian on this issue in the name of religion. Jaihind

EXPOSURE OF BODY by J.R.Zaidi on 03 Sep 2010

It is surprising to note that such thing happen in a state like Kerala where Burqa is hardly in use. If relatives of society wants a girl the dress approved by local society, there should not be any hue and cry.Relatives would like her to be decently dressed like wearing Saare with her breast wraped. They should have objected to wearing revealing dresses. Conservative Hindus also do so, but it is not make a news.
