Have not paid Rs 20 crore as bribe to A Raja: Ratan Tata

Mumbai Tata group Chairman Ratan Tata today rejected allegations of giving bribe to former telecom minister A Raja to secure 2G spectrum allocation and said charges being made in the court proceedings were an attempt at diversion.

"Not even one paisa was paid to Mr A Raja. The money was for the hospital and medical equipment meant for people. Since no hospital was built and no equipment was purchased, no money was paid.

"We do not make payments in advance. The statements made in courts are to create a diversion," Tata said while replying to a question on reports that the company had paid Rs 20 crore to a hospital in Raja's constituency.

Yesterday, jailed Swan Telecom's promoter Shahid Usman Balwa had said that Tatas gave donation to the tune of Rs 20 crore to a hospital in Tamil Nadu.

"We have not paid Rs 20 crore to A Raja. It's being said in the court for reasons of diversion," Tata told the shareholders at the 104th AGM of Tata Steel.

"Lots of things we have not said in public because we have given all the information to the agencies. Besides, the matter is sub-judice and we may risk contempt of court, if we see anything more," he said, adding, "We have never been asked or given any sort of bribe or gratification to A Raja or anybody else."

"I am sure, when the dust settles, things will become clearer. Unfortunately, there are no defamation laws in this country. But in a court they can make any statement they

like," Tata said.

TATA Donation by Natesan Narayanan on 04 Aug 2011

The Tata group will not give donation to all deserving hospitals in India. There is an element of grey area in this donation.

Mr by Tom Smith on 04 Aug 2011

Many people here will be very quick to support Tata saying that not a paisa was paid. My question is how do you know? Are you a person working on the case or a family member or friend of the Tatas? I am not saying that they paid this bribe but that it should be investigated and if it was indeed paid those involved should be arrested and tried just like the KGB allegations into the Gandhi family should be investigated and if found true, then those taking the bribe from the KGB should be arrested and tried for treachery.

Disgusting by Ramanuj Bhattacharya on 04 Aug 2011

There are always claims and counter claims in the court. I have one suggestion. If somebody is convicted in chating the people of India, the convict must be forced not only to return whatever was cheated off but also court fees along with a huge fine. First of all they cheat the Indians and then the Indians pay for all the court expenses and other incidentals. WHY? Raja may get a 5 year jail sentence. But, under the current system he doesn't have to pay back the money he has illegally acquired and not court fees. Why these criminals have the ability to double dip in cheating the people of India. I think we Indians behave like shit, our government behave like shit, our politicians behave like shit and our businessmen behave like shit. How can this country improve? Can't imagine that this country once produced the highest level of Spiritual knowledge. India is better off with the existing politicians and businessmen. May God save Mother India. Vande Mataram.

20 Crores to Raja by Tata by Kalpathy Venkataraman on 03 Aug 2011

What about subsidized asset sale in Chennai to Rajathi ammal (Karunanidhi's third wife and Kanimozhi's mother)? Does Mr. Tata deny that also? Karunanidhi's family benefited from the sale of this property. Is it for a quid pro quo from Raja?
